1Good afternoon, Principal, teachers and fellow students. Today I would like to talk about why every teenager should try volunteering. Some of you may think volunteering means giving up your precious free time. I used to think so too — until one summer changed my mind. My talk will take about five minutes, and I hope to change at least one mind.

2Last summer, I joined a service project visiting elderly people living alone in Sham Shui Po. At first, I simply helped with chores and read newspapers aloud. One afternoon, an old man called Uncle Ho asked me to sit down and just listen. He told me stories about the old harbour, his late wife and his favourite wonton shop. His eyes lit up whenever I asked another question. Soon, however, I realised that what they needed most was someone to listen. Volunteering is not about charity; it is about connection. I still visit him every month, and he calls me his grandson.

3Through service, we step outside our small world of exams and grades. We also develop empathy, communication skills and gratitude — qualities no textbook can teach. Research even shows that helping others lowers stress and makes us happier. Volunteering also looks good on your resume and university applications.

4I therefore encourage each of you to give just two hours a month. You do not need special skills, only an open heart and two hours. Join a flag-selling day, visit an elderly home, or teach a child to read. A small act of kindness can brighten two lives: theirs and ours. Thank you.

Sentence-by-sentence translation

Good afternoon, Principal, teachers and fellow students.

Today I would like to talk about why every teenager should try volunteering.

Some of you may think volunteering means giving up your precious free time.

I used to think so too — until one summer changed my mind.

My talk will take about five minutes, and I hope to change at least one mind.

Last summer, I joined a service project visiting elderly people living alone in Sham Shui Po.

Through service, we step outside our small world of exams and grades.

We also develop empathy, communication skills and gratitude — qualities no textbook can teach.

Research even shows that helping others lowers stress and makes us happier.

Volunteering also looks good on your resume and university applications.

I therefore encourage each of you to give just two hours a month.

You do not need special skills, only an open heart and two hours.

Join a flag-selling day, visit an elderly home, or teach a child to read.

A small act of kindness can brighten two lives: theirs and ours.

Thank you.

Steps

Good afternoon, Principal, teachers and fellow students Some of you may think volunteering means giving up your precious free time,再予以回應。
以範文為例:two hours a month 回答份量,join a flag-selling day, visit an elderly home, teach a child to read 回答內容,You do not need special skills, only an open heart
A small act of kindness can brighten two lives: theirs and ours,一句話講完義工的雙向價值,受助者與施助者同樣受惠,餘音可延續到演講之後。
Volunteering is not about charity; it is about connection,義工的價值在於連結而非施捨,一句金句把何伯的故事升華為普遍論點。
方法是用 we、you、Let us 等直接稱呼,句子短促易聽,書面語連接詞如 moreover、nevertheless 須克制使用。

Example

  1. 第一步:開場稱呼齊全(Principal、teachers、fellow students),先講反方想法「volunteering means giving up your precious free time」,再以「I used to think so too」拉近距離。
  3. 第三步:由故事提煉論點:「Volunteering is not about charity; it is about connection」——故事加金句令論點有溫度。
開場問候齊全,立即處理反方想法——「義工=犧牲私人時間」,再以「I used to think so too」建立共鳴。主體用親身故事:深水埗獨居的何伯請他坐下,聽他講舊港口、亡妻和雲吞麵舖,帶出「Volunteering is not about charity; it is about connection」這個核心論點。
