Fact and Opinion
- Opinion = 個人信念感受,subjective 主觀——the best、should、I think
Can this claim be proved by a study or an expert?
Can you prove it, or just believe it?
Passage
1Cats are the most popular pets in Hong Kong. There are about 400,000 pet cats in the city, and this number comes from a government survey. Cats sleep twelve to sixteen hours a day, and they can see well in the dark. These are facts, because we can prove them with numbers or simple tests. Cats are independent animals that do not need to be walked every day.
2However, some statements are opinions, not facts. “Cats are definitely the best pets” is an opinion, because it shows what the writer believes rather than what we can prove. “They are clean and quiet” sounds true, but many owners would disagree about the noise. An opinion is subjective; it belongs to one person. A fact is objective, because it is true for everyone and can be checked by anyone.
3When you read an advertisement or an article, look for evidence. Ask yourself: can this claim be proved by a study or an expert? If not, it may be an opinion. Writers sometimes show bias, which means they present only one side of the story. “Everyone should have a cat” is a strong opinion, not a fact. Remember: numbers, dates and records can usually be checked, so they often point to facts. Smart readers separate facts from opinions instead of believing every sentence they read.

Steps
There are about 400,000 pet cats in the city, and this number comes from a government survey.——objective 客觀。
Cats are definitely the best pets' is an opinion——subjective
Can this claim be proved by a study or an expert?
Cats sleep twelve to sixteen hours a day(可以調查)· they can see well in the dark(可以測試)。
They are clean and quiet' sounds true, but many owners would disagree about the noise.opinion 例靠語氣判斷:clean and quiet 聽落合理,但 owners 之間都有爭論——有爭論就不是 fact。
Everyone should have a cat' is a strong opinion, not a fact.——should 開頭多數是意見。廣告語言最偏見:the best in town、everyone loves it——宣傳句子幾乎全是 opinion。
400,000 pet cats(fact,survey)· see well in the dark(fact)· the best pets(opinion,個人喜好)。警號字清單背熟:best、should、I think、definitely、always、never——見到就舉手認 opinion。
Example
(1) There are about 400,000 pet cats in Hong Kong. (2) Cats are definitely the best pets. (3) Cats sleep twelve to sixteen hours a day.
口訣:fact 可以 prove,opinion 是 believe;見到 think、believe、should、best 就要警覺。
