§Text Passage

1Cats are the most popular pets in Hong Kong. There are about 400,000 pet cats in the city, and this number comes from a government survey. Cats sleep twelve to sixteen hours a day, and they can see well in the dark. These are facts, because we can prove them with numbers or simple tests. Cats are independent animals that do not need to be walked every day.

2However, some statements are opinions, not facts. “Cats are definitely the best pets” is an opinion, because it shows what the writer believes rather than what we can prove. “They are clean and quiet” sounds true, but many owners would disagree about the noise. An opinion is subjective; it belongs to one person. A fact is objective, because it is true for everyone and can be checked by anyone.

3When you read an advertisement or an article, look for evidence. Ask yourself: can this claim be proved by a study or an expert? If not, it may be an opinion. Writers sometimes show bias, which means they present only one side of the story. “Everyone should have a cat” is a strong opinion, not a fact. Remember: numbers, dates and records can usually be checked, so they often point to facts. Smart readers separate facts from opinions instead of believing every sentence they read.

  5. Opinion examplesFeeling words: 'They are clean and quiet' sounds true, but many owners would disagree about the noise.
  6. BiasOne side only = bias: 'Everyone should have a cat' is a strong opinion, not a fact — should usually signals opinion.
  7. Alarm wordsbest, should, I think, definitely — what follows these words is usually an opinion.
  8. Sort the passage400,000 pet cats (fact, survey); see well in the dark (fact, testable); the best pets (opinion, personal taste).

5Worked example Example

Decide whether each sentence from the passage is a fact or an opinion, and explain why: (1) There are about 400,000 pet cats in Hong Kong. (2) Cats are definitely the best pets. (3) Cats sleep twelve to sixteen hours a day.

  1. Step 1: Ask of each sentence — can it be proved? Numbers and sources usually mean fact.
  2. Step 2: Sentence (1) has a number and a government survey → fact (objective, checkable).
  3. Step 3: Sentence (2) says definitely the best — a personal belief → opinion (subjective).
  4. Step 4: Sentence (3) can be proved by observation and simple tests → fact.
  5. Step 5: Watch signal words — think, believe, should and best usually signal opinions.
  6. Answer: (1) Fact — it gives a number, about 400,000, from a government survey, so anyone can check it. (2) Opinion — 'definitely the best pets' is what the writer believes; it cannot be proved, and many people would disagree. (3) Fact — how long cats sleep can be proved by observation and simple tests. Rule of thumb: a fact can be proved; an opinion is believed. Watch for signal words like think, believe, should and best.
