3Step by step Steps
- Verb reviewExample: verbs are doing words: run, eat, play, read. On Sports Day the whole school is running, jumping and cheering, which makes it perfect practice. To test a word, ask: can you do this action? If you can, it is a verb.
- Paragraph 1: the raceExample: I run very fast in the race; my parents watch me and cheer; my little sister waves. Four verbs — run, watch, cheer, wave — live in this paragraph. Point at each one with your finger as you read.
- Paragraph 2: picnic and gamesExample: we eat sandwiches at the picnic; some friends throw the ball; some jump high; and my team wins a red star. Learn each verb together with its noun, such as throw the ball, and the phrase will come out naturally.
- The -s ruleExample: I run, but My father watches and My sister waves. Add s after he, she or it; keep the base form after I, you, we and they. After writing, find the subject first and check the verb second — a two-step check that catches most errors.
- Base form after canExample: I can swim. She can jump high. Can is a helping word that means ability; the verb after it always stays in the base form, with no s and no -ing. Remember the rule: once can appears, the verb goes back to base.
- New verb matchingExample: cheer means to shout for someone, wave means to move your hand, throw means to send the ball, win means to come first. Say each word and do the action; your body helps your memory. These four appear all day on Sports Day — make one sentence with each.
- Sentence practiceExample: write three sentences about your own Sports Day: I run in the race. My team wins a star. I eat sandwiches on the grass. Find the subject in each sentence first, then decide whether the verb needs s.
5Worked example Example
Sports Day verb cards: put five actions into sentences and watch what happens when the subject changes.
- Read the five verbs: run, cheer, wave, throw, win. Do one action for each word.
- I-sentences first: I run in the race. I throw the ball. After I, use the base form.
- Family next: My father watches. My sister waves. After he or she, add s.
- Team: My team wins a red star. Team counts as it, so wins takes s too.
- Can-sentences: I can run fast. She can jump high. The verb stays in the base form after can.
- Final check: find the subject in every line; does each he/she/it verb carry s?
- Answer: Example: I run in the race. My father watches and cheers. My sister waves. My team wins a red star. I can run fast.
