3Step by step Steps

  1. Noun reviewExample: a noun names a person, place, animal or thing. P1 gave us girl, school and desk; P2 adds boy, dog and ferry. To test a word, ask yourself: is it the name of a person, a place or a thing? If the answer is yes, it is a noun.
  2. Paragraph 1: out of the bus windowExample: Mother says, "Look out of the window." Ken sees a school, a park, a big ferry, a boy, a dog and many trees. One short paragraph hides so many nouns — circle them with your pencil as you read along.
  3. Sort into four basketsExample: places: school, park; people: boy, Ken, mother; animal: dog; things: tree, ferry, bus. Ask what each word stands for, then drop it into the right basket. Four clear baskets make the idea of nouns solid.
  4. Paragraph 2: Mother explainsExample: School and park are places. Boy and dog are people and animals. Their names are all called nouns. This definition is the key line of the lesson; learn it well and you can use the same pattern to explain any noun.
  5. Paragraph 3: write and playExample: Ken writes cat, book and school in his notebook, then plays a noun game with friends on the playground: point at anything and say its English name. Learning through games works best — play the same game at home with your parents.
  6. a, an and manyExample: use a or an before one noun: a school, a ferry; use an when the word starts with a, e, i, o or u, as in an apple. Use many with plurals: many trees. Remember: vowel at the start, use an; otherwise a; many for lots.
  7. Sentence practiceExample: I can see a ferry. / I can see many trees. Look out of your window and name whatever you see, starting every sentence with I can see. Everything you name is a noun — keep it up for a week and the progress will show.

5Worked example Example

Bus-window noun sort: put the things Ken sees into four baskets, then check every a and an.

  1. Read paragraph 1 again and circle every noun; ask first: person, place, animal or thing?
  2. Places basket: school, park — both are places you can visit.
  3. People basket: boy, Ken, mother. Remember, the name Ken is a noun too.
  4. Animal basket: dog; things basket: tree, ferry, bus. A ferry is a boat, so it is a thing.
  5. Check a and an: a school and a ferry take a; an apple starts with a vowel, so an.
  6. Say one I can see ... sentence for each basket, for example: I can see a ferry.
  7. Retell all four baskets together at the end and make sure no noun is left out.
  8. Answer: Places: school, park; people: boy, Ken, mother; animal: dog; things: tree, ferry, bus.
