3Step by step Steps

  1. Paragraph 1: at the tea houseExample: the family eats noodles, rice and small dumplings at the tea house; everything is hot and nice. I drink a glass of milk, and my little brother drinks water. Note that a glass of measures by the container, so the phrase is never left out.
  2. Paragraph 2: at the marketExample: the market is big and busy. We buy bread, eggs, apples and bananas. Mother lets me pick six red apples, and I eat a banana on the way home. Big and busy is a perfect pair of adjectives for describing a place.
  3. Paragraph 3: into the fridgeExample: I help Mother put the eggs in the fridge and count them first: one, two, three ... ten eggs! Dinner is fried rice with an egg on top. Counting aloud is a natural way to practise plural nouns — try it at home too.
  4. Food word groupsExample: staples: rice, noodles, bread, dumplings; fruit: apple, banana; egg and milk: egg, milk. Grouping words makes them much easier to remember. Read each group aloud twice and picture the food as you speak.
  5. How to count thingsExample: six red apples puts the number first, the colour second and the noun last; a glass of milk measures by the container; ten eggs is simply number plus plural. Remember the order: number, then adjective, then noun.
  6. Countable or notExample: eggs are countable, so we say ten eggs; rice is a grain-like mass noun, so only some rice with no s; milk and water are liquids, so they are uncountable too. The test is simple: if you can count items one by one, it is countable.
  7. Sentence practiceExample: I eat noodles at the tea house. / We buy ten eggs at the market. Write one sentence about eating and one about buying, put the place at the end, keep the number before the noun, then read each sentence back to check the order.

5Worked example Example

Write a shopping list: group the eight food words, add numbers, then check countable and uncountable nouns.

  1. Read the eight words: rice, noodles, bread, egg, apple, banana, milk, water, and picture each one.
  2. Group them: staples rice, noodles and bread; fruit apple and banana; egg and milk.
  3. Add numbers: six red apples, a banana, ten eggs, a glass of milk — number first, adjective in the middle, noun last.
  4. Countable check: eggs carries s and is countable; rice, milk and water are uncountable, so no s.
  5. Join the list into one line: We buy bread, eggs and six red apples. And comes before the last item.
  6. Read the final answer once and check every plural and uncountable noun.
  7. Answer: We buy bread, ten eggs and six red apples. We drink a glass of milk. Rice and water have no plural s.
