3Step by step Steps

  1. The story startsExample: a little cat sits near the school gate: It is thin and hungry. It hides under a car. When we do not know an animal's sex, English always uses it. The first step of the story is to introduce the hero with it.
  2. Everyone has a pronounExample: I give it some water; Mary gives it a biscuit, so we say She is kind (Mary = she); Tom tells Miss Lee, so He wants to help (Tom = he). Swapping names for pronouns keeps the sentences from repeating and getting dull.
  3. Seven subject pronounsExample: I, you, he, she, it, we, they — read them in order until smooth. The first five are singular and the last two are plural; he is for a male, she for a female, and it for an animal or a thing. Each has its own job.
  4. am / is / areExample: I am kind. He is kind. She is kind. It is hungry. We are kind children. They are kind. Am goes with I; is goes with he, she and it; are goes with we, they and you. Learn this table by heart — nearly every English sentence needs it.
  5. we or theyExample: We take turns to look after it — we includes the speaker; they points to another group. The only test is whether you belong to the group: my classmates and I are we, and the next class is they.
  6. its means itsExample: He wants to find its home — its shows the home belongs to the cat. Its is the owning form of it, one extra s with a completely new meaning: it is the animal, its is belonging to the animal. Watch for that little s when you read.
  7. Sentence practiceExample: Mary gives the cat a biscuit. She is kind. First say who she is, then write one sentence with we and one with they. Check the verbs: after she add s; after we and they keep the base form.

5Worked example Example

Cat rescue team: swap the names for pronouns, then match each pronoun with the right be-verb.

  1. Read the seven subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Say them in order twice.
  2. The cat becomes it: It is thin and hungry. Animals always start with it.
  3. Mary becomes she: She gives it a biscuit. Note the s in gives.
  4. Tom becomes he: He tells Miss Lee about the cat. Tells takes s too.
  5. My friends and I become we: We take turns to look after it. Take stays in the base form.
  6. Finish with He is kind. She is kind. We are kind. Check every am, is and are.
  7. Answer: The cat is it, Mary is she, Tom is he, and my friends and I are we. Example: It is hungry. She gives it a biscuit. We take turns to look after it.
