3Step by step Steps

  1. The sceneExample: I go to the supermarket with my mother and we get a trolley at the door. A scene opens with the place and the people; catch these two first and the rest is easy. Supermarket is super plus market — split the word to remember it.
  2. Paragraph 1: the shopping routeExample: first we go to the vegetable section for tomatoes and carrots, then to the meat section. Shopping follows the areas in order, and the passage uses first and then to show it. Mark these order words as you read.
  3. Paragraph 2: two signsExample: two signs hang in the store: No smoking and Please keep the trolley to the right. The first one bans; the second one requests. Signs that begin with Please sound polite and appear everywhere in public places.
  4. No + doing wordExample: No smoking means smoking is not allowed; No running and No eating work the same way. When a sign starts with No, the action that follows is banned, and the verb takes -ing. This is the fixed form of prohibition signs.
  5. Pictures helpExample: some signs carry a picture too, such as a cigarette crossed out. A picture is faster than words, but the safest way is to read both: the picture gives an instant impression and the words give the exact meaning.
  6. Answer Mother's questionsExample: use the words from the passage: It says "No smoking." and Keep the trolley to the right. Starting with It says is the standard way to report what a sign reads, and it works everywhere once you know it.
  7. Sentence practiceExample: I see a sign. It says "No smoking." Use this two-sentence pattern for any sign in the supermarket: first say that you see it, then report its words. Soon you can do it anywhere while shopping.

5Worked example Example

Be a sign expert: match three signs to their meanings, then introduce one with the pattern.

  1. Sign 1: No smoking — no cigarettes; No plus a doing word bans the action.
  2. Sign 2: Please keep the trolley to the right — a polite request beginning with Please.
  3. Sign 3: No eating here — the same No pattern again.
  4. Circle the keywords: smoking, trolley and eating — the heart of each sign.
  5. Introduce one: I see a sign. It says "No smoking." — seeing first, then reporting.
  6. Answer: No smoking means no cigarettes; keep the trolley to the right means trolleys on the right; No eating means no food.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✗ Read No smoking as "you may smoke".
✓ No + action always bans it.
✗ Write super market as two words.
✓ Supermarket is one word.
✗ Answer in your own language.
✓ Say it in English: It says "No smoking."
✗ Push the trolley on the left.
✓ Follow the sign: keep the trolley to the right.
