3Step by step Steps

  1. The taskExample: Mr Chan asks us to write five sentences about a friend. The job sounds small but the rules matter: every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, and the five lines together make a mini profile of a friend.
  2. Sentence 1: the topicExample: My best friend is Amy. Name the person in the very first line so the reader knows the topic at once. This is the topic sentence, the most important of the five, and the other four lines all grow out of it.
  3. Sentences 2 and 3: factsExample: She is eight years old. / We go to school together every day. These two lines give the age and a shared routine — the basic facts. Words like every day make a sentence concrete instead of vague.
  4. Sentences 4 and 5: character and hobbiesExample: She likes to read and draw. She is kind to everyone. She always helps me. The frequency word always goes before the verb; if it moves to the wrong place, the sentence sounds strange.
  5. End with a feelingExample: I am happy to have a good friend. Close with your own feeling so the writing ends warm. Facts first and feelings last is a classic ending, and this sentence pattern fits almost any topic.
  6. Format checkExample: before handing in, check every sentence: capital letter first, full stop last, then check spelling and grammar. Read the lines aloud once — your ears catch what your eyes miss, and the habit lifts your accuracy fast.
  7. Sentence practiceExample: use the same plan for your own friend: who first, then age, then what you do together, then what kind of person they are, and finally your feeling. Follow the five steps, then compare your draft with the model.
