3Step by step Steps
- The headingExample: the first line carries the date and the weather: Sunday, 13 October. Weather: cloudy. The day comes first, then the date, then Weather: for the sky. P1 taught the format and P2 keeps using it.
- Past tense arrivesExample: a diary tells what happened yesterday, so the verbs change: I went to the library (go becomes went); I borrowed three story books (borrow adds ed). Remind yourself before writing: this all happened yesterday, so every verb must change.
- Three irregular past formsExample: go becomes went, eat becomes ate, see becomes saw. They ignore the ed rule and must be learnt one by one, and tests love them. Say one sentence about yesterday with each, and in a week they will come out by themselves.
- Regular past formsExample: borrow becomes borrowed, play becomes played, watch becomes watched — most verbs simply add ed. Watch the spelling: a verb that already ends in e takes only d, as in like becoming liked. Look at the ending first.
- Writing the newsExample: In the morning, I went to the library with my father. I read the books with my classmate Amy under a big tree. Read keeps the same spelling in the past, so use the context to tell; the time phrase In the morning sits at the front to mark the order.
- Check four thingsExample: check the spelling, capital letters, full stops and grammar — all four, just as the passage says. Pay special attention to every verb: did it all change into the past form? Tick the four boxes one by one.
- Write one todayExample: use went, ate and saw for yesterday: I went to the park. I ate a bun. I saw a dog. Three past-tense lines plus a heading with the date and the weather make a proper little diary.

5Worked example Example
Write a past-tense diary: heading first, three sentences about yesterday, then a feeling to close.
- Heading: Monday, 14 October. Weather: sunny. Date and weather on line one.
- Sentence 1: I went to the park with my sister. Went is the past of go.
- Sentence 2: We ate sandwiches on the grass. Ate is the past of eat.
- Sentence 3: I saw a big dog near the gate. Saw is the past of see.
- Close with a feeling: It was a happy day. Was is the past of is.
- Check: every verb in the past? Heading, capitals and full stops all in place?
- Answer: Monday, 14 October. Weather: sunny. I went to the park with my sister. We ate sandwiches on the grass. I saw a big dog near the gate. It was a happy day.
