3Step by step Steps

  1. Paragraph 1: Grandfather's birthdayExample: Father buys a big cake. Mother cooks noodles and eggs, because long noodles mean a long life. Grandmother makes tea for everyone. Each family member has a job, and the party begins like this.
  2. Paragraph 2: the birthday cardExample: Sister draws a birthday card with a cake and seven candles on it. A candle is a must-know birthday word. The number seven goes before the plural candles, so remember the final s.
  3. Uncle and aunt arriveExample: Uncle and aunt bring fruit and a warm jacket. Family words like uncle and aunt appear less often, so a party is a good time to review them. When the whole family arrives, the party comes alive — the warm heart of the passage.
  4. Four birthday stepsExample: sing the birthday song, make a wish, blow out the candles, and everyone claps. These four phrases always come in this order; say them in sequence and you can use them directly in your own writing.
  5. Family word paradeExample: father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt — one party uses all eight words. Group them by generation: parents with grandparents, then siblings with uncle and aunt. Grouping makes the words stick.
  6. Add s to verbsExample: My father buys. My mother cooks. My grandmother makes. My sister draws. When the subject is he, she or one family member, the present-tense verb takes s. The rule appears most often in sentences about family, so check every verb after writing.
  7. Sentence practiceExample: My sister draws a birthday card. Use the pattern My ___ plus a verb with s to say what your family members do at the party. Say three sentences, one for each person, then let your family guess who you mean.

5Worked example Example

Party planner: read the eight family words, match them with their actions, then write three full sentences.

  1. Read the eight family words: father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt.
  2. Match set one: father buys a cake; mother cooks noodles; grandmother makes tea. Read each verb s clearly.
  3. Match set two: sister draws a card; uncle and aunt bring fruit; grandfather blows out the candles.
  4. Write 1: My father buys a big cake. Check the s in buys before moving on.
  5. Write 2: My grandmother makes tea for everyone. Makes also takes s.
  6. Write 3: We sing the birthday song together. With we, the verb stays in its base form.
  7. Read all three sentences aloud and listen to whether every verb s sits in the right place.
  8. Answer: Example: My father buys a big cake. My grandmother makes tea for everyone. We sing the birthday song together.
