Passage

1The Temple Street night market wakes up as the sun goes down. Rows of amber light bulbs flicker on one by one, stretching like a golden ribbon into the distance. By seven o'clock the stalls have multiplied, the crowd has thickened, and Kowloon has grown a second heartbeat. The first sight that greets you is colour: red lanterns, blue plastic sheets and green vegetables stacked in shining pyramids.

2Then come the sounds and smells. The air carries a chaotic symphony: sizzling woks, street singers grinding out old Cantopop, and the bargaining voices of shoppers who know the game perfectly. A cloud of smoke rises from the clay-pot stalls, smelling of dried squid, curry and charcoal. Follow your nose to a dai pai dong and the taste arrives: fiery chilli crab, sweet-scented milk tea, egg waffles crisp at the edge and soft within. Every mouthful tells you that this is a place built for the senses, not for silence.

3Touch and detail complete the picture. The handle of a battered wok shines from decades of use, and a stallholder's fingers move with the speed of someone who has cracked ten thousand eggs. An old fortune-teller sits under a dim lamp, spreading his worn cards with practised grace, while a child tugs at her mother's sleeve, begging for a glowing toy. Each small detail is a brick in the market's stubborn, cheerful character.

4I soak in every sight, sound and smell, knowing that this vibrant scene is uniquely Hong Kong. Malls may be air-conditioned and orderly, but they will never breathe like Temple Street at night. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this street is worth a whole dictionary, and I intend to keep reading it, stall by stall, for many years.

Sentence-by-sentence translation

The Temple Street night market wakes up as the sun goes down.

Then come the sounds and smells.

Touch and detail complete the picture.

I soak in every sight, sound and smell, knowing that this vibrant scene is uniquely Hong Kong.

Malls may be air-conditioned and orderly, but they will never breathe like Temple Street at night.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this street is worth a whole dictionary, and I intend to keep reading it, stall by stall, for many years.

Steps

以本课范文为例,follow your nose to a dai pai dong 由嗅觉自然过渡到味觉,段落之间有了牵引。
以本课范文为例,结尾 if a picture is worth a thousand words, this street is worth a whole dictionary,再许诺 keep reading it, stall by stall。

Example

  5. 第五步:结尾比喻升华:「If a picture is worth a thousand words, this street is worth a whole dictionary」。
