Passage

1Taking good notes is an important skill, yet most students do it badly. They copy every word the teacher says, producing three pages of tangled sentences that nobody, least of all themselves, can decipher a week later. Good note-taking works in the opposite direction. You should not record everything; you should capture key points only. Write keywords instead of full sentences, use abbreviations such as 'w/' for 'with' and 'b/c' for 'because', and leave white space so your future self can add thoughts.

2Structure matters as much as speed. Organize your notes by topic with clear headings, bullet points and a simple outline, so that any page can be turned into a one-paragraph summary without rewriting anything. Highlight sparingly: if half the page glows yellow, nothing stands out. A useful rule is to highlight only after you have decided what the main point of the section is, because the decision is the thinking, and the thinking is the learning.

3Timing is the secret ingredient. Review your notes within 24 hours of writing them; research shows this single habit can improve memory by as much as eighty per cent. During that first review, reflect for five minutes: what did I not understand, and what will appear in the exam? Write your questions in the margin and bring them to the next lesson.

4Good notes will save you hours when you study for examinations, because revision becomes a conversation with a clear, organized summary rather than a hunt through a textbook. Ten minutes of disciplined notes in class can easily replace an hour of confused cramming at midnight. The pen, used properly, really is mightier than the highlighter.

Sentence-by-sentence translation

Taking good notes is an important skill, yet most students do it badly.

Structure matters as much as speed.

Timing is the secret ingredient.

Review your notes within 24 hours of writing them; research shows this single habit can improve memory by as much as eighty per cent.

During that first review, reflect for five minutes: what did I not understand, and what will appear in the exam?

Write your questions in the margin and bring them to the next lesson.

Good notes will save you hours when you study for examinations, because revision becomes a conversation with a clear, organized summary rather than a hunt through a textbook.

Ten minutes of disciplined notes in class can easily replace an hour of confused cramming at midnight.

The pen, used properly, really is mightier than the highlighter.

Steps

以本课文章为例,you should not record everything; you should capture key points only 正是核心原则。
易错位在于考生笔记一泻到底,无标题无分段,温习时要重新消化一次;结构化的笔记 so that any page can be turned into a one-paragraph summary,这正是效率所在。
以本课文章为例,结论 the pen, used properly, really is mightier than the highlighter,用得其所的笔胜过萤光笔。

Example

结构——每个 topic 一个标题、bullet points 加大纲,任何一页可以即时变一段 summary;萤光笔省住用,决定了主旨先划,因为「the decision is the thinking」。
