3Step by step Steps
- Step 1: Check the denominatorsBefore subtracting, check the denominators as with addition: in 68 − 28 both are 8, so subtract directly. Equal denominators mean equal pieces, and only then can counts of pieces be taken away. Checking first is step one of all fraction arithmetic.
- Step 2: Subtract the numeratorsSubtract the top numbers: 6 − 2 = 4, the numerator of the new fraction. Holding 6 parts and using 2 leaves 4 parts, and that is exactly what the subtraction counts; write 4 above the line first.
- Step 3: Keep the denominatorWrite the denominator 8 unchanged, giving 48. The denominator is never subtracted and never changes: 40 and 46 are both wrong, because the size of each part stayed the same throughout. The bottom number is always the original denominator.
- Step 4: Understand whySix eighths take away two eighths leaves four eighths. Each part keeps its size; only the number of parts changes, so the denominator stays and the numerators subtract. It is the same idea as like-denominator addition, run backwards.
- Step 5: Simplify if possibleAfter subtracting, check for simplifying: 48 with top and bottom divided by 4 gives 12. Simplifying makes the answer clearest to read. Not every problem needs it, but every problem deserves the check.
- Step 6: Subtracting to zero37 − 37 = 07 = 0: all three parts are used and none is left, which is zero. A numerator of zero makes the whole fraction zero; 07 and plain 0 are both correct, and plain 0 is usually tidier.
- Step 7: Word-problem formatWord problems need three parts: the expression, the working and the answer. A cup holds 68 litre and you drink 28 litre: write 68 − 28 = 48 = 12, then answer: 12 litre is left, remembering the unit at the end.

5Worked example Example
Example: a cup holds 68 litre of water. You drink 28 litre. How much is left? And after drinking 18 litre more?
- Question 1: the denominators match (both 8), so subtract directly.
- Subtract the numerators: 6 − 2 = 4, keep the denominator 8, giving 48.
- Simplify: 48 = 12, so 12 litre is left.
- Question 2: after drinking 18 litre more, work from what remains: 48 − 18 = 38.
- Simplify check: 3 and 8 share no common factor, so 38 is in simplest form.
- Check: the two drinks total 28 + 18 = 38 litre, and 68 − 38 = 38 litre, agreeing both ways.
- Answer: Question 1 leaves 12 litre, and after drinking 18 litre more, 38 litre is left. The denominator stayed 8 throughout while the numerators fell to 4 and then 3, and the first answer 48 simplifies to 12. Adding the two drinks to get 38 litre and subtracting from 68 both give 38 litre, so the answers agree and are correct.
6Common mistakes Mistakes
✗ Subtracting denominators too: 68 − 28 = 40.
✓ Keep the denominator; subtract only the numerators → 48.
✗ Subtracting anyway when the numerator is too small: 25 − 35 written as 15.
✓ If the numerator is too small you need regrouping (a later topic) — check first before subtracting.
✗ Leaving 48 unsimplified.
✓ Always simplify: 48 = 12.
✗ Reversing the order: writing 28 − 68 as 48.
✓ The minuend comes first: 68 − 28 = 48 — never swap them.
7Quick check Quick check
Q158 − 28 = ?
Answer: 38 (keep denominator, 5−2).

Q279 − 49 = ? Simplify your answer.
Answer: 39 = 13.
Did you get it right?
Q3Why is 67 − 27 not 40?
Answer: The denominator is the size of each part — taking parts away does not change their size, so it stays 7 → 47.
