Decimal × Decimal
Foundation0.2 × 0.3 = 0.06.
After this lesson, you can:
- Multiply as whole numbers first, then place the point
- Total decimal places = places of both factors added
- Pad zeros from the right when needed (0.3 × 0.02 = 0.006)
1Summary 重點摘要
0.2 × 0.3 = 0.06.
2Vocabulary cards Vocabulary
D
Decimal小數
A number with a decimal point, e.g. 0.3, 1.25.
D
Decimal point小數點
The dot between the whole and decimal parts.
D
Decimal places小數位
How many digits after the point: 0.3 has 1, 0.15 has 2.
P
Product積
The answer after multiplying, e.g. 0.06 in 0.2 × 0.3.
E
Estimate估算
Rough check: 0.2 × 0.3 must be less than 0.2.
W
Whole-number multiplication整數乘法
Step one ignores the point: multiply as whole numbers, 2 × 3 = 6.
C
Count and place數位點點
Count total decimal places from the right, then place the point.
T
Trailing zero尾零
A zero at the end, e.g. 0.180 can be written 0.18.
3Step by step Steps
- Step 1: Multiply as whole numbersFor 0.2 × 0.3, ignore the decimal points at first and multiply 2 × 3 = 6 as whole numbers. Getting the digits right comes first; the point is placed afterwards. This keeps your attention on the multiplication itself.
- Step 2: Count the decimal placesCount the decimal places of both factors: 0.2 has 1 place and 0.3 has 1 place, so together there are 2 places. The product always has as many decimal places as both factors put together, so remember this total.
- Step 3: Place the point from the rightCount 2 places from the right of the product 6 and write the point: 0.06. If the digits run out, pad zeros on the left: with 3 places, the 6 becomes 0.006. Padding keeps the counting accurate.
- Step 4: Why the product is smaller0.2 means 210 and 0.3 means 310, so the product is 6100, which is 0.06. Multiplying two numbers smaller than 1 gives a result smaller than both, which is quite different from whole-number multiplication.
- Step 5: Estimate to check0.2 × 0.3 must be smaller than both 0.2 and 0.3. An answer like 0.6 or 6 is impossible, because the product cannot exceed either factor. A quick size check catches a misplaced decimal point early.
- Step 6: More decimal placesTry a longer example: 1.2 × 0.15. As whole numbers, 12 × 15 = 180; the places total 1 + 2 = 3, so count 3 from the right to get 0.180, and the trailing zero can be dropped: the answer is 0.18.

5Worked example Example
Example: work out 2.4 × 0.15, then use an estimate to check the answer.
- Multiply as whole numbers: ignore the decimal points first, 24 × 15 = 360.
- Count the decimal places: 2.4 has 1 place and 0.15 has 2 places, so 3 in total.
- Place the point: count 3 places from the right of 360, giving 0.360.
- Simplify: the trailing zero can be dropped, so 0.360 = 0.36.
- Estimate to check: 2.4 × 0.15 should be near 2 × 0.15 = 0.3, and 0.36 is close.
- Answer: 2.4 × 0.15 = 0.36. We first multiplied 24 by 15 to get 360, then counted 3 decimal places from the right to get 0.360, and dropped the trailing zero to make 0.36. The estimate 2 × 0.15 = 0.3 is very close to 0.36, which shows the decimal point is in the right place and the answer is correct.
6Common mistakes Mistakes
✗ Ignoring decimal places: writing 0.2 × 0.3 as 6.
✓ After whole-number multiplying, place the point: 6 with 2 places → 0.06.
✗ Not padding zeros: 0.3 × 0.02 written as 6 or 0.6.
✓ Count 3 places from the right, padding zeros → 0.006.
✗ Assuming the product is always bigger.
✓ Multiplying by a number under 1 shrinks: 0.5 × 0.2 = 0.1 < 0.5.
✗ Keeping or dropping zeros randomly: 0.360 → 0.0360.
✓ Trailing zeros can simply go: 0.360 = 0.36.
