3Step by step Steps
- What is a signA sign is a board with rules or tips written on it. You see signs on the bus, in the library and at the park gate. Reading signs is very useful: we learn where to be quiet and where not to run, so we follow the rules and never get things wrong. Stop and read whenever you see a sign.
- The sign on the busThe sign on the bus says: Please give your seat to people in need. In the story, I see an old lady get on, so I stand up and offer my seat, and she says thank you. Understanding a sign is the first step; following it in real life is what reading is really for.
- School gate and classroomAt the school gate, say good morning to the teacher. In the classroom, take out my book and read together with my friends. The things we do every day at school can all be said in simple English. Doing and saying together slowly makes English part of daily life.
- Break timeAt break time we play. Playing for a little while helps us relax, and then we go back to class with energy. Even at play we must remember the school rules and never chase or run wildly. Play and study are both important parts of a happy school day.
- Two school signsKeep quiet in the library and Do not run. Notice the useful pattern keep + adjective: keep quiet, keep clean. Sentences that begin with Do not are prohibitions, and the verb after them stays in its base form. Learn this pattern and you can read many more signs.
- Two steps to read a signReading a sign has two steps: first read the big words (the title) to know what the sign is about; then find the keywords, such as quiet and run. Two keywords can tell you the whole message. Make a habit of big words first and small words next, and signs become quick and easy.
- Sentence practiceIntroduce a school sign with the pattern: I see a sign. It says "Do not run." Choose a sign that really exists in your school and introduce it to a classmate, saying clearly what the sign reads and what it asks us to do. The more complete your introduction, the better.
5Worked example Example
Be a little sign reader: match three signs to the right places, then say what each sign means.
- Read the first sign: Please give your seat to people in need. It hangs on the bus.
- Read the second sign: Keep quiet in the library. It hangs in the library.
- Read the third sign: Do not run. It hangs in the school corridor.
- Circle the keyword of each sign: seat, quiet, run. One word recalls the whole sign.
- Introduce one with the pattern: I see a sign. It says "Do not run." Say where it hangs too.
- Finally say the meanings: give your seat to people in need; keep quiet; no running.
- Answer: The seat sign goes with the bus; Keep quiet with the library; Do not run with the corridor. Meanings: please give your seat; keep quiet; do not run. Read the big words first, then find the keywords.
