3Step by step Steps
- Three parts of a diaryA complete diary needs three things: the date, the weather and the news of the day. With all three, the diary is complete. A diary is written for yourself, and you can share it too; write each day in English, and in a few months you will have a record of how you grew.
- The headingThe first line of a diary is the heading: Sunday, 15 March. Weather: sunny. Put the date and the weather at the very front, so anyone can see at once which day it was and what the sky was like. The first letters of days and months are capitals — that is the rule for dates.
- Use I in the newsToday I go to the park with my family. A diary tells your own story, so the news sentences usually begin with I and Today, which sound close and direct. Write what you did, what you saw, and whether you were happy or sad — all of these are good diary material.
- Time orderWrite the events in time order: in the morning We eat sandwiches under a big tree; then My brother flies a kite. One event, one sentence, lined up by time, so readers feel they are spending the day with you, step by step.
- End with a feelingIt is a happy day. One sentence of feeling at the end gives the diary warmth. Feelings can be happy, tired, fun or unforgettable, like I am tired but happy. With a feeling at the end, a diary is not just a list of events but also a record of the heart.
- Check the formatAfter writing, check the format: are the capital letters, full stops and spelling all right? Keep all the sentences in one paragraph, not scattered everywhere. A diary may be short, but the format should be neat: heading on one line, news in one paragraph, feeling at the end.
- Write one todayThe formula is simple: date plus weather, then three events, then one feeling. Start tonight and write your first English diary: the date, the day and the weather first, then pick three things you remember and give each one a sentence, and finish with your mood. Keep writing every day.
5Worked example Example
Write a complete diary: heading plus three news sentences, then one sentence of feeling at the end.
- Write the heading: Monday, 16 March. Weather: cloudy. Capital letters for the day and the month.
- Write news sentence one: Today I go to the library with my mother. Begin with Today and I.
- Write news sentence two: I read two story books. One event, one sentence.
- Write news sentence three: We eat noodles for lunch. Keep going in time order.
- Write the feeling: It is a happy day. One sentence at the end records your mood.
- Check the format: capitals, full stops and spelling; keep everything in one paragraph.
- Read the whole diary once, from the heading to the feeling, and today's first diary is done.
- Answer: Monday, 16 March. Weather: cloudy. Today I go to the library with my mother. I read two story books. We eat noodles for lunch. It is a happy day. Heading, news and feeling — all three parts are complete.
