3Step by step Steps
- What is a sentenceOne sentence tells one thing. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. I get up at seven. is a complete sentence. Before writing, ask yourself three questions: who is it about? What does he do? And when? With the three answers ready, a clear English sentence is written.
- Capital letter rulesThere are three rules for capital letters: the first word of a sentence takes a capital (I get up ...); names take a capital (Amy); and I is always a capital, wherever it stands in the sentence. Remember all three rules, and check every sentence again after writing.
- Full stop rulePut a full stop at the end of every sentence: I go home at four. Without a full stop the sentence is not complete, and readers do not know where to pause. It is the same for long pieces of writing: one sentence, one full stop, so everything reads smoothly.
- One idea, one sentenceI eat bread. I drink milk. Each sentence tells one thing; do not squeeze several ideas into one long, messy sentence. For beginners, short sentences are best: make one thing clear first, then write the next sentence, and your sentences will grow longer naturally with practice.
- Use time wordsUse time words to put sentences in order: I get up at seven; at recess I play; I go home at four. Time words give the writing an order, so readers follow the day from morning to afternoon, and everything is clear at a glance.
- Check in three stepsAfter writing, check in three steps: first check the spelling of every word; then check the grammar, especially the verbs; finally look at the capital letters and the full stops. Read the sentences aloud once at the end — if they sound smooth, they are usually right.
- Sentence practiceWrite three sentences about your day: I get up at seven. I go to school with my mother. I play with my friends after school. When you finish, read them to your family and let them guess which sentence describes your favourite thing of the day.
5Worked example Example
Write three sentences about your day: time words plus verbs, with capital letters and full stops, then check each one.
- Think of three things first: get up, go to school, play after school. One thing per sentence.
- Write sentence one: I get up at seven. Check the capital I and the full stop.
- Write sentence two: I go to school with my mother. Say clearly who you go with.
- Write sentence three: I play with my friends after school. The time words sit at the end.
- Check three things: a capital at the start, a full stop at the end, and correct spelling.
- Read all three aloud once, in time order, and the little piece is finished.
- Answer: I get up at seven. I go to school with my mother. I play with my friends after school. Three sentences from morning to afternoon, each with a capital letter and a full stop.
