3Step by step Steps
- Three steps againPicture reading uses the same three steps as reading a passage: read the title first, then look at the picture, and finally find the keywords. A picture gives clues beyond the words, such as the setting and what people are doing. Follow the order and nothing important is missed.
- Paragraph 1: a day in the parkOn this day I go with my family to the park: I play on the slide, my brother flies a kite, and my mother sits on a bench. While reading, match each person with an action: I am on the slide, my brother holds the kite, my mother sits down. A picture of the park appears in your mind.
- Pictures help you understandIn the picture you can see the trees and the kite. Matching the things in the picture with the words makes the scene clear at once: the story happens in a park. Looking at pictures is not a waste of time; picture and text confirm each other, and new words stick better.
- Paragraph 2: how to readRead in order: first the title, which tells you the text is about a park; then the picture, where you find the slide, the kite and the bench; finally the keywords in the text: slide, kite, bench. The title gives the direction, the picture gives the scene, and the keywords give the details.
- Paragraph 3: answer questionsThe question asks Where do they go? and the answer, the park, sits in the very first sentence. Answer exactly what is asked: for a place, answer with a place, and add nothing extra. Find the right sentence first, and then pick out the most direct answer from it.
- Read the sign tooThe sign at the park gate says Keep the park clean. It means we must not drop litter. When reading with pictures, read the words on signs and posters as well; they are part of the text, and sometimes they hold the answer to a question.
- Talk about the picturePoint at the picture and say: I play on the slide. My brother flies a kite. Use the picture and the words together, pointing and speaking at the same time, and turn the text into your own words. Then let a classmate look at the picture and guess which part you are describing.
