A word that takes the place of a noun.
The person speaking. Always a capital letter.
The person or people listening.
One boy or man.
One girl or woman.
One thing or animal.
Me and other people.
Other people, animals or things.
3Step by step Steps
- What is a pronounPeter has a kite. He runs fast. The word He takes the place of Peter, so we do not repeat the name again and again. Such words are pronouns. With pronouns our sentences are shorter and smoother. Try it: replace a name that appears many times with he or she, and hear the difference.
- Use them in paragraph 1Practise in the first paragraph: Peter is a boy, so use he: He runs fast. Jane is a girl, so use she: She eats an apple. The kite is a thing, so use it: It looks like a big bird. Remember the little rule: he for boys, she for girls, it for things.
- The seven subject pronounsEnglish has seven subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we and they. Read them in order aloud several times until you know them by heart. When you speak or write, think first about who or what you are replacing, and then pick the right one.
- I is always capitalThe pronoun I is always written as a capital letter, whether it stands at the start, in the middle or at the end of a sentence: I am their friend. This is an iron rule of English. Other pronouns like you, he and she are usually small letters. Check that I is never lowercase.
- am, is and areEach pronoun has its own be-verb: I takes am (I am a pupil); he, she and it take is (She is my sister); you, we and they take are (They are happy). When two people or two things are joined together, use they: Peter and Jane becomes They are happy.
- we or theyWe and they are both plural, but the angle is different. Use we for the people on your side: We have lots of fun. Use they for the other group: They laugh and play together. Decide first which group you belong to, and then choose we or they.
- Sentence practiceJoin two sentences with a pronoun: This is Amy. She is my friend. The second sentence uses She instead of Amy, so the name appears only once. Count how many times you save the name, and you will see how pronouns make sentences shorter.
5Worked example Example
Pronoun matching race: change names and things into the right pronouns, then build full sentences with them.
- Read the seven pronouns first: I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Remember who each word stands for.
- Match the singulars first: Peter (a boy) becomes he; Jane (a girl) becomes she; the kite (a thing) becomes it.
- Then the plurals: Peter and Jane become they; Peter and I (with me included) become we.
- Add verbs and read aloud: He runs. She eats. It flies. The verb takes s after he, she or it.
- Write full sentences: This is Amy. She is my friend. The second sentence uses She for Amy.
- Finally check each other's sentences: look for wrong pronouns and a small i that should be I.
- Answer: Peter becomes he, Jane becomes she, the kite becomes it, Peter and Jane become they, Peter and I become we. Full sentence: This is Amy. She is my friend. Pronouns stop us from repeating names.
