Passage

1Of course, late homework is perfectly fine. It shows that you are very creative about time, and that deadlines are just suggestions made by boring adults. Handing it in a week late simply adds a little excitement to a teacher's day. The word "deadline" should never worry you, especially when a new game season has just started. After all, why finish something today when you can finish it... someday? Rules, as everyone knows, are only for other people.

2Teachers should be thrilled to mark your work at midnight, especially when they have three hundred other books to check. They have nothing better to do than to wait for your masterpiece. And think of the suspense: will it be one day late, or two, or maybe never? Your parents, who check your homework diary every night, will be equally proud. Who cares that the school rule clearly says no late work?

3Your classmates, who handed theirs in on time, will surely admire your special treatment. Your future boss will also love your relaxed attitude to deadlines. Nothing says "I am ready for the workplace" like a pile of unfinished tasks. Meanwhile, the students who work steadily can enjoy watching you rush. So please, keep the excuses coming, because teachers really enjoy collecting them. Perfect.

Sentence-by-sentence translation

Of course, late homework is perfectly fine.

Teachers should be thrilled to mark your work at midnight, especially when they have three hundred other books to check.

They have nothing better to do than to wait for your masterpiece.

And think of the suspense: will it be one day late, or two, or maybe never?

Your parents, who check your homework diary every night, will be equally proud.

Who cares that the school rule clearly says no late work?

Your classmates, who handed theirs in on time, will surely admire your special treatment.

Perfect.

Steps

Of course, late homework is perfectly fine,迟交功课完全没有问题,perfectly fine 赞得夸张失实,正是第一个警号。
例如:课文说 your future boss will also love your relaxed attitude,未来雇主也会欣赏你散漫的态度;现实职场岂会如此?
例如:课文有夸张赞美 perfectly fine 与 teachers should be thrilled,有荒谬理由 boring adults,又有 never、everyone knows 一类绝对字眼;讲得愈绝对愈夸张,反讽的可能性愈高。
Nothing says "I am ready for the workplace" like a pile of unfinished tasks。
The writer is being sarcastic because he exaggerates — "Of course, late homework is perfectly fine.",先判断作者语带讽刺,再指出其夸张之处,最后引原句支持,层次分明。

Example

  1. 第一步:留意『讲反说』讯号——Of course, late homework is perfectly fine 夸张开场。
  2. 第二步:找荒谬理由——deadlines are just suggestions made by boring adults.
  3. 第三步:用现实检查——your future boss will also love your relaxed attitude?
  6. 答案:The writer is being sarcastic — he does not really support handing in late homework. The clues are the exaggerated praise (perfectly fine, teachers should be thrilled), the absurd reasons (deadlines are just suggestions made by boring adults) and the ironic predictions (your future boss will also love your relaxed attitude). The one-word ending, Perfect., is the sharpest sarcasm of all.
