§Text Passage
1Saturday, 16 May - Sunny
2Today I wake up early because I am very excited. My mother takes me to the Central Library. The library is quiet and cool, and there are books everywhere. I borrow three storybooks about animals. My mother reads magazines and drinks tea there. We sit by the big window and read quietly.
3After the library, we eat noodles in a small restaurant. The noodles are delicious, and the soup is hot. In the afternoon, I write my reading diary at my desk. I draw a picture of a panda on the cover. I write the title on the first page too.
4Writing a diary helps me remember my happy days. My teacher says good writers write a little every day. At night, I read one more story about a brave little bird. Tomorrow I will tell my best friend about my new books. I think she will want to read them too!

3Step by step Steps
- The headingThe diary opens with a heading: Saturday, 16 May - Sunny — date, month and weather on one line. A comma follows the day, the month takes a capital, and a dash links the weather. The P3 format is fuller than the lower grades. Tip: months are capital anywhere; the date is written 16, not sixteenth.
- Open with feelingsOpen with feelings: Today I wake up early because I am very excited — because joins the result and the reason. A diary records the day's feelings, so naming the mood first pulls the reader in. Tip: for yesterday's diary, switch to past forms — woke up, was excited; for today, keep the present.
- Place detailsGive the place: My mother takes me to the Central Library — takes me to means bring me there; The library is quiet and cool, and there are books everywhere uses two adjectives plus there are. Name the place, then give the feel. Tip: Central Library is a proper noun with two capitals; a library in general is just the library.
- Order the activitiesOrder the day: library first, noodles at lunch, the reading diary in the afternoon, one more story at night. Time words — after, in the afternoon, at night — keep the order clear for the reader. Tip: a comma follows a time word at the front; use and only to join two actions in one sentence, not four.
- Quote someoneQuote someone: My teacher says good writers write a little every day. Says introduces the thought with no quotation marks — an indirect quote. Tip: in an indirect quote the verbs stay in the present; use quotation marks only for direct quotes: My teacher says, "Write every day."
- Check four thingsCheck four things: the heading is complete (date, month, weather); the tense matches — present for today, past for yesterday; capitals and full stops all present; spelling and grammar checked. Tip: the commonest error is mixed tenses — half present, half past; decide today or yesterday before you write.
- Write one todayWrite one today: a heading line, one feeling sentence to open, three activity sentences, one closing line — tonight it is done. Diaries work best when true; write your real day and the lines will fill themselves. Tip: one activity per sentence is enough; the closing should echo the opening mood, as in It is a quiet and happy day.
5Worked example Example
Write a library diary: heading, feeling, three activities and a closing, in four moves.
- Heading: Sunday, 17 May - Cloudy — comma after the day, dash before the weather.
- Feeling opening: Today I wake up early because I am excited. because links waking early with the excitement.
- Activity 1: My father takes me to the library. takes me to means bring me there.
- Activity 2: I read two story books about animals. two needs the plural books.
- Activity 3: We eat noodles for lunch. for lunch means as lunch.
- Closing: It is a quiet and happy day. Two adjectives joined by and wrap up the day.
- Answer: Sunday, 17 May - Cloudy. Today I wake up early because I am excited. My father takes me to the library. I read two story books about animals. We eat noodles for lunch. It is a quiet and happy day.
