3Step by step Steps

  1. The model textThe title of the model is My School Bag. English titles use title case: every main word starts with a capital — My, School, Bag; short words like of and in may stay small. A clear title tells the topic at a glance. Tip: titles take no full stop; copy the title on the first line before you start.
  2. Open with an introductionOpen with three sentences: This is my school bag names the star; My mother gives it to me in September tells where it came from, with in + month giving the time; It is blue and white, my favourite colours adds the look, my favourite colours being a little extra note. Tip: gives takes s because my mother is singular; three sentences are enough.
  3. Middle: detailsFill the middle with details: There are two big pockets and one small pocket brings in the numbers; I keep my books inside the big pocket says where things live; My pencil case goes in the small pocket uses goes for where it sits. Tip: two or more pockets take there are; one single thing takes there is.
  4. Add a habitEvery Friday, I clean my school bag adds a habit: the frequency phrase opens the sentence and takes a comma; the main clause stays in the present simple for a weekly routine. Tip: no comma is needed when the phrase sits at the end; and clean here is a verb, not the adjective clean.
  5. End with feelingsClose with feelings and plans: My school bag is my good helper gives the bag a role; I will take good care of it uses will for a future promise, and take care of means look after. The closing line answers the opening, so the text feels whole. Tip: will is followed by the base verb take; it replaces my school bag.
  6. ChecklistUse a four-item checklist before handing in: capitals (sentence starts, I, title); full stops at every sentence end; spelling checked word by word; grammar — verb forms and articles. Tick each item and the mistakes will have nowhere to hide. Tip: the two most missed spots are the capital I and the plural s.
  7. Sentence practiceWrite My Pencil Case with the same four moves: introduce with This is my pencil case; give details with It is blue and small; add a habit with Every Sunday, I clean it; end with It is my good helper. Four sentences make a tiny text. Tip: one sentence per move; finish the whole draft first, then check.

5Worked example Example

Write 'My Pencil Case' in four moves, following the model, then check the format.

  1. Introduction: This is my pencil case. One short line names the star.
  2. Details: It is blue and small. I keep a pen, a pencil and a ruler inside — look first, then contents.
  3. Habit: Every Sunday, I clean my pencil case. Frequency phrase first, comma, then the main clause.
  4. Feeling: It is my good helper at school. A small metaphor closes and echoes the opening.
  5. Check: title capitals? Full stops? Do there are and the numbers match?
  6. Answer: This is my pencil case. It is blue and small. I keep a pen, a pencil and a ruler inside. Every Sunday, I clean my pencil case. It is my good helper at school.
