3Step by step Steps
- The scene: the zooThe zoo is a fun place sets the scene. Inside there are lions, tigers and elephants, and the monkeys are playful — they jump around. Find the place and the animals first, like pinning a map, and the later details will have somewhere to sit. Tip: animal words take plurals for the whole group, brought in by there is / there are.
- Time informationThere is a bird show at two o'clock — at gives the clock time, and times often sit on signs and posters. Watch for markers like o'clock, a.m. and p.m., and slow down when you see one. Tip: there is goes with the singular a bird show; more than one show needs there are; clock times take at, not in or on.
- Two important signsOne sign at the entrance says Buy your ticket here; another says Do not feed the animals. Read the verb first: one asks you to do something, the other forbids it — opposite directions. Tip: sign words are short and direct, so grab the verb and check whether a Do not starts the line.
- Imperative signsBuy your ticket here is an imperative — it tells you to act; Do not feed is a negative imperative — it bans the act. Imperatives start with the base verb and drop you, because the target is everyone. Tip: the imperative verb never takes s or to; after Do not, the verb stays in the base form too.
- Opening hoursThe zoo is open from nine to five: from gives the start, to gives the end, and together they show a range — from Monday to Friday, from two to four. Tip: from and to work as a pair; from nine alone is incomplete, and the state is written is open, not is opening.
- Why read the signsRemember to read the signs first. They keep us and the animals safe. Signs are the safety rules of a place: one tells us to buy tickets, one protects the animals from wrong feeding. Signs is plural because there is more than one. Tip: remember to do means not forget to do; remember doing means recall doing it before.
- Sentence practiceReport a sign with says: The sign says "Do not feed the animals." — the sign + says + the words, often inside quotation marks. Try another: The sign says "Buy your ticket here." Tip: says is third person singular; inside the quotation marks, copy the sign word for word with no new subject.
