3Step by step Steps

  1. Opening the lessonGood morning, class! Please listen to me carefully. The teacher reminds everyone to listen before giving instructions. Good morning greets the class, please adds politeness, and carefully tells how to listen. Tip: listen always needs to before the person — listen to me, never listen me.
  2. Instruction 1: open booksFirst, open your books to page ten. First marks step one, and open your books to page ten means turn to page ten. Numbers need sharp ears: page ten and page fifteen differ only at the start. Tip: turn to a page with to, not in; if unsure, check a neighbour's book.
  3. Ask politely to repeatMiss Lee, can you repeat that, please? Asking politely is always allowed, and teachers are happy to repeat. This line beats pretending to understand. Tip: that in can you repeat that points to what was just said; to ask for a slower voice, say Can you speak slowly, please?
  4. Instructions 2 to 4Instructions come in a row: Ben, please read the first sentence. Now close your books and stand up. Take out your colour pencils and draw a picture. Do them one by one: read, then close and stand, then draw. Tip: words like now and then mark the order — hear one, do it, then wait for the next.
  5. Asking permissionCan I draw a dog, Miss Lee? — Of course, Ken. Draw anything you like. Can I + verb asks permission, and raising your hand to ask is your right in class. Tip: the verb after Can I stays in the base form — draw; permission answers are Of course or Sure, while I am afraid not refuses softly.
  6. Tidy-up instructionsPut your pictures on my desk and sit down; put away your colour pencils. Put away means tidy them back where they belong. Tip: after put away comes the thing being tidied; where things go needs a preposition — on my desk puts them on top, in your bag puts them inside.
  7. Read togetherLet us read the new words together. Ready? One, two, three! — Rabbit, tiger, lion, panda! Let us proposes a joint action, and together at the end stresses doing it as one class. Tip: the verb after let us stays base — read; keep to the class rhythm, neither rushing ahead nor lagging behind.

5Worked example Example

The full classroom flow: listen once and do all six steps in order.

  1. Step 1: Open your books to page ten — listen hard for the number.
  2. Step 2: Close your books and stand up.
  3. Step 3: Take out your colour pencils and draw a picture.
  4. Step 4: Put your pictures on the teacher's desk and sit down.
  5. Step 5: Put away your colour pencils.
  6. Step 6: Open again and read the words together: Rabbit, tiger, lion, panda!
  7. Answer: Order: open to page 10, close and stand, draw, hand in and sit, put away, read the words together.
