Belonging to us: our classroom.
Belonging to them: their books.
3Step by step Steps
- Why pronounsPronouns take the place of nouns, so we need not repeat names. Ken is my friend. He sits in front of me — say Ken once, then let he do the job. Repeating Ken in every line sounds dull. Tip: name the person first, and only then switch to he or she.
- Subject pronounsThe seven subject pronouns — I, you, he, she, it, we, they — go before the verb: She is our class monitor, We always play together. Whoever does the action takes the subject form. Tip: I is always capital; you covers both singular and plural; it can stand for an animal or a thing.
- Object pronounsAfter verbs or prepositions use the object forms: me, you, him, her, it, us, them. In Ken sits in front of me, of is a preposition, so me; in Give him the book, him receives the book; in I like her, her follows like. Tip: he becomes him, she becomes her — the two sets never mix.
- PossessivesPossessives sit before nouns and say whose: my friend, her name, our classroom, their books. The set is my, your, his, her, its, our, their, and each one must be followed by a noun. Tip: its shows possession, it's is short for it is — the apostrophe changes everything.
- One clear tableOne clear table: I—me—my; he—him—his; she—her—her; we—us—our; they—them—their. Column one does actions, column two receives them, column three owns nouns. Chant it until the choice is instant. Tip: she shares her for both object and possessive — look for the noun after it: her bag.
- Trap positionsSay in front of me, not in front of I, and between you and me, not between you and I: of and between are prepositions, and object pronouns always follow them. Verbs behave the same way: Miss Lee teaches us English. Tip: when and joins two pronouns, each still follows its own position.
- Sentence practiceChain four lines: This is Amy introduces her; Her name is Amy uses the possessive; She is our monitor uses the subject form; We like her uses the object form. Point out each form as you read. Tip: in Her name is Amy, her owns the noun name; in We like her, her follows the verb — same spelling, different jobs.
5Worked example Example
Three-column practice: fix the wrong sentences and use all three forms — subject, object and possessive.
- Subject: She is our class monitor. He sits in front of me. Both subject pronouns sit before verbs.
- Object: Give him the book. Miss Lee teaches us English. him and us receive the actions.
- Possessive: Her name is Amy. Our classroom is big. her and our are followed by nouns.
- Trap: Ken sits in front of I is wrong — change it to in front of me; prepositions take object forms.
- Check: subject before verbs; object after verbs and prepositions; possessive before nouns — go through all three rules.
- Answer: She is our class monitor. Give him the book. Her name is Amy. Our classroom is big. Ken sits in front of me.
