3Step by step Steps

  1. Common instruction wordsFive short phrases come up all the time in class: stand up, sit down, open, close, point to. Learn these five first, and you can act as soon as you hear them. Doing the action while you listen fixes the words far better than just reading a book.
  2. please is politeThe teacher says, "Stand up, please." Adding please to an instruction makes it friendly and polite. please can sit at the end of the sentence or at the front: Please open your book. Learn to add this one word, and your words sound gentle at once.
  3. Listen to the whole lineOpen your book and point to the cat. has two actions: first open the book, then point to the cat. Listen to the whole sentence before you move, and count how many actions there are. If you start halfway through, you often miss the second half.
  4. Ask when unsureIf you do not hear clearly or you do not understand, say Pardon, please? and ask the speaker to say it again. Never guess and never act at random. Asking first is a sign of serious learning, and teachers and classmates are always happy to repeat. Asking boldly is how English improves.
  5. Repeat after meThe teacher says, "Repeat after me: goodbye, Ben!" Repeat after me means say it after the speaker, so the pupils answer Goodbye, Amy! This drill trains pronunciation and intonation: listen once, say it once, and your mouth remembers the rhythm of the whole sentence.
  6. Answer praiseWhen you do well, you hear Well done! or You follow every instruction very well. Answer praise with Thank you! Accept it happily and thank the giver, and you will do the next instruction with even more energy.
  7. Pair practiceWork in pairs: one gives instructions, the other acts: Stand up. Then Open your book. Then Point to the cat. Finally Sit down. After one round, swap roles, so each of you takes a turn to speak and a turn to act, and both of you get the practice.

5Worked example Example

Listen and act: follow the four instructions, then say the action verbs.

  1. Listen to instruction one: Stand up, please. Stand up as soon as you hear it.
  2. Listen to instruction two: Open your book. Open the book and lay it flat.
  3. Listen to instruction three: Point to the cat. Point your finger at the cat in the picture.
  4. Listen to instruction four: Close your book and sit down. Do both actions, not just one.
  5. Say the verbs again: stand up, open, point to, close, sit down, doing each action once more.
  6. Finally test each other: your friend reads an instruction and you act it out.
  7. Answer: The order: stand up, open the book, point to the cat, close the book and sit down. Five verbs: stand up, open, point to, close, sit down. Listen to the whole line first, and never miss the second action.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✗ Open your book understood as close it.
✓ Open and close are opposites. Keep them apart.
✗ Stand still when unsure.
✓ Say Pardon, please? and listen again.
✗ Give instructions rudely.
✓ Add please: Stand up, please.
