3Step by step Steps

  1. What is a nounMiss Lee says, "Nouns are names of people, places and things." The names of people (girl, teacher), places (school, park) and things (desk, bus, book) are all nouns. When you see something, ask yourself: what is its English name? That name is a noun.
  2. Find nouns in paragraph 1Read Kate walks to school. She sees a cat on the wall. and find the nouns: Kate is a person, school is a place, and cat and wall are things. To find a noun, ask: is this a person, a place or a thing? If the answer is yes, it is a noun.
  3. Find nouns in paragraph 2In the second paragraph, girl, cat, school, teacher, park and bus are all nouns. Look around the classroom too: desk, window and door are nouns as well. Nouns are all around us, so if we pay attention, we can find them everywhere we go.
  4. Names are nouns tooKate, Amy, Miss Lee and Hong Kong are special nouns called proper nouns. They name one particular person or place, so the first letter must be a capital: Kate, Hong Kong. Common nouns like girl and school stay small. Always check your writing for missing capitals.
  5. Sorting gamePut the nouns you know into three baskets: people: girl, teacher, Kate; places: school, park, classroom; things: cat, desk, book, bus. When everything is sorted, check the baskets once more for mistakes. Sorting games help us remember nouns well and recall them quickly.
  6. a, an and pluralsFor one thing, put a or an before the noun: a cat, a book, an apple. For two or more, add s at the end: two books, three cats. Try it with an apple: one apple is an apple, and two apples are two apples. When the number changes, the word changes too.
  7. Sentence practicePractise with the pattern I can see a cat. Play the pointing game with a classmate: point at things around you and say their English names, like I can see a book. Every name you say is a noun, and you learn them all while you play the game.

5Worked example Example

Noun sorting race: put the nouns Kate sees in the passage into three baskets — people, places and things.

  1. Read the passage again and circle every noun you find, then count how many you have found.
  2. Fill the people basket first: Kate, Amy, Miss Lee, girl, teacher. These are all names of people.
  3. Fill the places basket: school, park, classroom, school gate. These are all names of places.
  4. Fill the things basket: cat, wall, desk, window, door, book, bus. These are all names of things.
  5. Check the proper nouns: do Kate and Miss Lee begin with capital letters? Fix them if not.
  6. Count the nouns in each basket and see which basket has the most. Things often win!
  7. Pick one noun from each basket and make a sentence: I can see a cat. Read it aloud to check.
  8. Answer: People: Kate, Amy, Miss Lee, girl, teacher; places: school, park, classroom; things: cat, wall, desk, window, door, book, bus. Remember the capital letters in Kate and Miss Lee.
