§Text Passage
1Last summer, our family went on a trip to Bangkok. We took the Airport Express to the airport early in the morning. The train was fast and quiet, and I watched the sea through the window. Dad checked our passports three times because he did not want to lose them. I held my ticket tightly and counted the stations on the screen.
2At the check-in counter, Dad showed his passport and our tickets. Mum was worried because our luggage was too heavy, so we moved some clothes into our handbags. Before we boarded the plane, I took a photo of our plane and sent it to my best friend. The journey took about four hours, and I slept on the plane after a cup of orange juice.
3In Bangkok, we travelled around by train and taxi. The train station was crowded, but the trains were cheap and cool. We used a map to find the famous night market, and we got lost twice before we found it! I bought souvenirs for my classmates there, and Dad tried mango sticky rice for the first time. It was the best trip of my life. I hope we can visit Bangkok again soon.

3Step by step Steps
- PlacesTravel places: airport, station, hotel, harbour. Example: We arrived at the airport early. Use arrive in for cities and arrive at for a building or a spot, so choose the preposition with care.
- DocumentsTravel documents: ticket, passport, visa. Example: Show your passport at the gate. A one-way ticket goes one way only, and a return ticket covers both ways; always put a or your before ticket.
- ItemsTravel items: luggage, map, camera, suitcase. Example: Dad checked in our luggage. Luggage is uncountable: never say a luggage or luggages; say a piece of luggage instead.
- ActionsTravel verbs: travel, arrive, depart, board. Example: The plane departs at nine. Depart and arrive are opposites, and airport signs use Departures for leaving and Arrivals for landing.
- by + transportUse by plus the means of travel: by MTR, by bus, by plane. Example: We travelled to Bangkok by plane. Walking is on foot, never by walk, and no article goes after by, so never say by a bus.
- Order of a journeyTell the journey in time order with First, Then and Finally. Example: First, we took the Airport Express. Then Dad checked in. Finally, we boarded the plane. Keep the verbs in the past tense and add a comma after the time word.
5Worked example Example
Question: How do we describe a trip? Say where you went, how you travelled, what you did on the way, and how you felt at the end.
- Step 1: Open with the time and the place — Last summer, our family went on a trip to Bangkok. One sentence gives the whole background.
- Step 2: Say how you travelled — We took the Airport Express to the airport and flew there by plane. Took and flew are past tense, and by plane names the means.
- Step 3: Add a detail on the way — Dad checked in our luggage, and I watched the sea through the window. One line about the family and one about you makes the scene real.
- Step 4: Say what you did on arrival — We visited the temple and ate Thai food. Keep the past tense in visited and ate.
- Step 5: Close with a feeling — It was the best trip of the year. The superlative best sums up the whole trip in one line.
