§Text Passage

1Everyone in my family has a different hobby. My hobby is painting, and I draw pictures of the sunset every weekend. Last Sunday, I painted the harbour with the sky turning orange and pink. It is creative and relaxing at the same time. I keep all my paintings in a big box under my bed, and my teacher says they are getting better.

2My brother enjoys swimming because it is fun and keeps him fit. He trains at the pool three times a week and dreams of joining the school team. My sister loves reading; she can finish a book in two days. Her favourite stories are about animals and magic, and sometimes she reads to me before bed.

3My father's hobby is collecting stamps from different countries. He has over five hundred stamps in his album! Each stamp has a story, and he shows them to us after dinner. Mum thinks gardening is the best hobby because she grows beautiful flowers on our balcony. Hobbies make our free time colourful and help us learn new things. What is your hobby?

3Step by step Steps

  1. QuietQuiet hobbies: reading, painting, collecting stamps, playing chess. Example: My hobby is reading. The -ing form works like a noun here, with no the before it.
  2. ActiveActive hobbies: swimming, running, cycling, hiking. Example: I go swimming every Saturday. Go plus an -ing activity means to take part in that sport, as in go swimming or go cycling.
  3. AdjectivesFeeling words for hobbies: fun, relaxing, creative, exciting. Example: Reading is relaxing. An -ing adjective describes the thing; an -ed adjective describes how a person feels, as in I am excited.
  4. DescribeThe basic pattern is My hobby is... because... Example: My hobby is painting because it is creative and relaxing. Because adds the reason, so one sentence covers both what and why.
  5. Adjectives for hobbiesMatch each hobby with a different adjective. Example: Painting is creative. Swimming is exciting. Reading is relaxing. A gerund subject takes the singular verb is, and varied adjectives keep the lines fresh.
  6. How often and how longSay how often and how long: I paint for two hours every weekend. For plus a length of time and every plus a frequency show real commitment, far better than a vague often.

5Worked example Example

Question: How do we introduce our hobby? Cover what it is, when you do it and why you like it, add one small story, and finish with a question.

  1. Step 1: Name the hobby — My hobby is painting. A short, direct opening sets the topic at once.
  2. Step 2: Say when you do it — I paint pictures every weekend. Every weekend shows a habit, so use the present tense.
  3. Step 3: Give the reason with because — I like it because it is creative and relaxing. A reason gives the talk some substance.
  4. Step 4: Add one small story — Last Sunday, I painted the harbour at sunset. A concrete time and scene make the talk memorable.
  5. Step 5: Ask a question back — What is your hobby? Ending with a question keeps the conversation going and sounds polite.
  6. Answer: Sample answer: My hobby is painting. I paint every weekend because it is creative and relaxing. Last Sunday, I painted the harbour when the sky turned orange. What is your hobby? What, why, a small story and a question: four sentences make a complete introduction.
