§Text Passage

1Last month, I was ill and had to stay in bed for three days. I felt weak, and even climbing the stairs made me tired. The doctor told me to eat a balanced diet and do more exercise. He also said I should sleep before ten o'clock every night. I promised him I would change my habits.

2Now I eat more vegetables and fruit every day. They give me vitamins that keep my body healthy. I also eat eggs, fish and milk for protein, which makes my muscles strong. I used to love fried chicken and soft drinks, but now I eat them only once a week. Mum says I am becoming a smart eater.

3Every morning, I exercise for thirty minutes in the park with Dad. We jog, stretch and sometimes play badminton. My mother says healthy food is like fuel for our body, and junk food is like bad petrol. Now I seldom get sick, and I have more energy at school. I can even concentrate better in class. A healthy body helps us study better, and I want to keep this good habit forever.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Food typesFood groups: vegetables, fruit, protein and grains. Example: I eat vegetables every day. Vegetables is usually plural because we eat several kinds at once; fruits can be used when we mean different kinds of fruit.
  2. NutrientsNutrients: vitamin, fibre, calcium, protein. Example: Milk gives us calcium. Use give us plus the nutrient; add -s to the verb when the food is singular, as in gives.
  3. HabitsHealthy habits: a balanced diet, exercise, enough sleep. Example: A balanced diet keeps us healthy. Diet here means everyday food; keep us healthy is keep plus object plus adjective, showing a state.
  4. BodyBody words: strong, ill, healthy, weak. Example: Exercise makes me strong. Make plus object plus adjective means to cause a change; ill often comes after a verb, as in fall ill.
  5. Doctor's adviceReport the doctor's words with told me to plus the base verb. Example: The doctor told me to eat a balanced diet. After to always use the base form, never -ing; should in the original becomes to plus the verb.
  6. Should and should notGive advice with should; the negative is should not or shouldn't. Example: You should drink more water. Use the base verb after should; too many goes with countable nouns and too much with uncountable nouns.

5Worked example Example

Question: The doctor gives advice about food. How do we report it and add our own advice?

  1. Step 1: Set the scene in the past tense — Last month, I was ill and stayed in bed for three days. Time first, so the listener can follow the story.
  2. Step 2: Report the advice — The doctor told me to eat a balanced diet. Told me to plus the base verb is the fixed pattern for reporting advice.
  3. Step 3: Say what you should do — I should eat more vegetables and fruit. Should plus the base verb sounds polite and natural.
  4. Step 4: Say what you should not do — I should not drink too many sugary drinks. The base verb still follows should not; too many fits countable nouns.
  5. Step 5: Add exercise advice to close — I should exercise for an hour every day. A length of time makes the advice concrete.
  6. Answer: Sample answer: Last month I was ill. The doctor told me to eat a balanced diet and do more exercise. Now I eat more vegetables and fruit, and I do not drink sugary drinks. I exercise every day, so I feel strong again. Report, advice and change are all there, and feel strong at the end echoes ill at the start.
