3Step by step Steps

  1. Paragraph 1: Amy goes to schoolRead the sentence I put my bag on my chair. It means Amy places her schoolbag on the chair. A bag holds your things, a chair is what you sit on, and a desk is what you write on. Every morning Amy carries her big bag to school and puts it on the chair by the window.
  2. Paragraph 2: Things on the deskAmy takes her book and pencil out of the bag. She puts her pen and ruler on the desk, and keeps her eraser inside the pencil case. Point at the things on your own desk and say each English name aloud. Saying the words while pointing helps you remember them.
  3. Paragraph 3: Pack upMiss Lee says, "Keep your desk clean and tidy." So before going home, Amy puts everything back into her bag, sits down quietly and reads her book. This paragraph reminds us to return things to the right place after using them, so the classroom stays neat.
  4. Group 1: stationeryBook, pen, pencil, ruler, eraser and pencil case all belong to stationery. They are the things you use for writing and reading every day. Learning words in groups is much easier than learning them one by one, so try to say the whole set each time.
  5. Group 2: furnitureA desk is the table you write on, and a chair is the seat you sit on. Both are classroom furniture. Remember the little rhyme: write at the desk, sit on the chair. The prepositions at and on matter when you make your own sentences.
  6. a or anUse a before words that begin with a consonant sound: a bag, a book, a pen. Use an before words that begin with the vowels a, e, i, o, u: an eraser, an apple. Look at the first letter of the word first, then choose a or an.
  7. Sentence practiceMake sentences with This is my pencil case. and I have a blue bag. Start each sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full stop. Point at real things around you and say three full sentences aloud. Saying and pointing together works best.

5Worked example Example

Help Amy pack her bag: sort the eight school things into groups, add a or an, then say a full sentence with This is ...

  1. Read the eight words first: bag, book, pen, ruler, pencil, eraser, desk, chair. Watch the first letter of each word; you will need it soon.
  2. Pick the writing tools: pen, pencil, ruler and eraser. These four are the things you use when you write or draw.
  3. Pick the furniture: desk and chair. The bag holds things and the book is for reading, so they go into the other group.
  4. Add a or an: a pen, a ruler, a desk, but an eraser, because eraser begins with the letter e.
  5. Build full sentences: This is an eraser. That is my chair. Remember the capital letter at the start and the full stop at the end.
  6. Say the sentences again while pointing at the real things, and check that you have chosen a or an correctly.
  7. Answer: Writing tools: a pen, a pencil, a ruler, an eraser; furniture: a desk, a chair; others: a bag, a book. Full sentences: This is an eraser. That is my chair.
