3Step by step Steps

  1. Paragraph 1: two pets at homeRead the lines: My cat is white. She likes to sleep on my bed. My dog is brown. He runs very fast. A cat and a dog are pets, and I feed them every day means giving them food each day. Notice how he and she are used for the two pets.
  2. Paragraph 2: at the zooThe zoo is full of animals: the tiger has black stripes, and the lion has long hair on its head. A rabbit is eating a carrot, and a bird is singing in the tree. Describing what animals look like in English makes your sentences more concrete and lively.
  3. Paragraph 3: pandasThe panda is black and white and loves to eat bamboo; it looks very cute. The fish swim here and there in the water. Learn to say the colour first and then what the animal eats, and you can introduce your favourite animal in two or three simple sentences.
  4. Two animal groupsSort the eight animals into two groups: kept at home: cat, dog, fish, rabbit; seen at the zoo: tiger, lion, panda, bird. After sorting, read the two lists again and think of more animals to add to each group. Sorting makes new words easy and fun to remember.
  5. he, she or itUse he or she when you know the animal is male or female: My cat is white. She sleeps a lot. Use it when you do not know the sex, or when you mean animals in general: Look at the bird! It can fly. Think first, and then choose the right pronoun.
  6. Plural rulesFor one animal use a: a cat, a dog. For two or more, add s: two cats, three dogs, four rabbits. Some words are special: many fish are still fish, with no s. Remember: the singular goes with a, and plurals go with numbers like two and three.
  7. Sentence practiceUse two patterns to talk about animals: A tiger has black stripes. and A dog can run fast. Has tells us about looks, and can tells us what an animal is able to do. Choose two animals yourself and make one sentence with A ___ has ... and one with A ___ can ...

5Worked example Example

Be a little zookeeper: sort the eight animals into groups and say one feature sentence for each group.

  1. Read the eight words first: cat, dog, bird, fish, rabbit, tiger, lion, panda. Picture each animal as you read.
  2. First the at-home group: cat, dog, fish, rabbit. These are pets that people keep at home.
  3. Then the zoo group: tiger, lion, panda, bird. You see these animals at the zoo.
  4. Match the features: a white cat, a brown dog, a black and white panda.
  5. Build full sentences: A tiger has black stripes. A rabbit eats carrots. Remember the s at the end of plurals like carrots.
  6. Finally play the zookeeper and introduce two animals to a classmate, one sentence each.
  7. Answer: At home: a cat, a dog, a fish, a rabbit; at the zoo: a tiger, a lion, a panda, a bird. Feature sentences: A tiger has black stripes. A rabbit eats carrots.
