  • Integrated tasks run in three steps: note while listening, compare with reading, write it up.

§Text Passage

1Good morning, students. Please clear your desks except for a pen, your notesheet and the leaflet I will mention in a moment. This broadcast is part of your integrated listening task today, so listen carefully and write only in the space provided. You will hear the broadcast only twice, so keep your pen moving and do not stop at any single word.

2First, listen to the guest speaker and take short notes. Ms Cheung, a social worker who has supported working students for over ten years, will share her opinion on part-time jobs for teenagers. Here is her message: part-time jobs teach responsibility, but schoolwork must always come first. She also warns that students should not take evening shifts before examination weeks.

3She gave one fact you must copy correctly — students may work no more than eighteen hours a week during school terms, and no more than eight hours on any single day. Write those numbers down carefully, because the quiz will test them. She also mentioned one case study: a student who improved his time management after starting a weekend job at a bookshop.

4Next, read the leaflet on your desk and compare it with your notes. Then organize your ideas into a short report of about 150 words. In your report, state the facts clearly and express your own opinion in the last paragraph. Remember to include at least three points from the speaker, and do not copy long sentences from the leaflet. You have one hour to finish.

§Sentence-by-sentence translation Sentence-by-sentence translation

Good morning, students.

Please clear your desks except for a pen, your notesheet and the leaflet I will mention in a moment.

This broadcast is part of your integrated listening task today, so listen carefully and write only in the space provided.

You will hear the broadcast only twice, so keep your pen moving and do not stop at any single word.

First, listen to the guest speaker and take short notes.

Ms Cheung, a social worker who has supported working students for over ten years, will share her opinion on part-time jobs for teenagers.

Here is her message: part-time jobs teach responsibility, but schoolwork must always come first.

She also warns that students should not take evening shifts before examination weeks.

She gave one fact you must copy correctly — students may work no more than eighteen hours a week during school terms, and no more than eight hours on any single day.

Write those numbers down carefully, because the quiz will test them.

She also mentioned one case study: a student who improved his time management after starting a weekend job at a bookshop.

Next, read the leaflet on your desk and compare it with your notes.

Then organize your ideas into a short report of about 150 words.

In your report, state the facts clearly and express your own opinion in the last paragraph.

Remember to include at least three points from the speaker, and do not copy long sentences from the leaflet.

You have one hour to finish.

3Step by step Steps

  1. ListenTake notes while listening and catch the speaker's points. Example: Ms Cheung's three points — part-time jobs teach responsibility, schoolwork must always come first, and no evening shifts before examination weeks.
  2. ReadRead the material and compare it with your notes. Example: read the leaflet, compare it with your notes and find where it overlaps and adds — but do not copy long sentences from the leaflet.
  3. WriteOrganise and write it up. Example: organize your ideas into a short report of about 150 words — outline first, facts in front, personal opinion only in the last paragraph.
  4. TipThe core technique: copy numbers exactly. Example: no more than eighteen hours a week during school terms, and no more than eight hours on any single day — the announcement says the quiz will test them.
  5. TimingWatch the limits. Example: You have one hour to finish, and You will hear the broadcast only twice — keep your pen moving and never stop at a single word.
  6. Case studyKeep the case study as evidence. Example: a student who improved his time management after starting a weekend job at a bookshop — quoting it makes your report three-dimensional.
  7. Full routineThe integrated routine: listen (three points plus numbers) → read (compare with the leaflet) → outline (order the facts) → write (150 words, facts first, opinion last) → check (numbers and spelling).

5Worked example Example

In the integrated task, after listening to Ms Cheung and reading the leaflet, what must the 150-word report include, and how should it be organised?

  1. Step 1: From listening, catch her three points: part-time jobs teach responsibility, schoolwork comes first, and no evening shifts before examination weeks.
  2. Step 2: Copy the numbers exactly — no more than eighteen hours a week and eight hours a day during school terms; the quiz will test them.
  3. Step 3: Note the case study — a student improved his time management in a weekend bookshop job — useful evidence for the report.
  4. Step 4: Read the leaflet against your notes, find where it overlaps and adds; never copy whole sentences from it.
  5. Step 5: Structure the report: facts first, personal opinion only in the last paragraph, about 150 words in one hour.
  6. Answer: The report must weave the listening and the reading together. It needs the speaker's three points — part-time jobs build responsibility, schoolwork always comes first, and evening shifts are unwise before examination weeks — plus two statutory numbers copied exactly: a maximum of eighteen hours a week and eight hours a day in school terms. The case study of the student whose time management improved in a weekend bookshop job makes strong supporting evidence. Organisation matters as much as content: outline first, state facts clearly, keep personal opinion to the final paragraph, paraphrase instead of copying the leaflet, and stay near 150 words. Since the broadcast plays only twice, the pen must keep moving during listening.

8Recap Recap

  • Integrated tasks run in three steps: note while listening, compare with reading, write it up.
  • Copy figures (hours, limits) exactly — they are the easiest marks to lose.
  • Speakers usually give two or three points; 'Firstly', 'Also', 'Finally' signal each one.
  • Paraphrase in your own words; copying whole sentences from the leaflet scores nothing.
  • Keep facts and opinions apart: opinion only in the last paragraph.
