§Text Passage

1The setting was a waterfront path in Hong Kong on a stormy summer evening. Marco, the main character, and his sister were walking home when the sky suddenly turned dark. The wind blew harder, and heavy rain began to fall. They hid under a small pavilion, but Marco noticed an old man standing alone in the rain. “Grandpa, come here! You will get wet!” Marco shouted. The old man smiled and joined them under the roof. A friendly dialogue began.

2The storm grew worse, and the pavilion shook in the wind. Marco felt a conflict: the storm was frightening, but the old man had no umbrella. “Where do you live?” Marco asked, and the old man pointed along the road. Marco looked at his sister, and she nodded. Together, they shared one umbrella and walked the old man home through the storm. The storm reached its climax as thunder rolled, but the old man kept talking about his garden and his grandchildren.

3At the door, the old man said, “Thank you, young man. Kind hearts are stronger than any storm.” It was a simple plot: a storm, an umbrella and a kind deed. When they finally got home, they were soaking wet, and their mother made them hot chocolate. The rain drummed on the windows all night, yet Marco slept with a warm smile, and the story found its happy resolution. Even the narrator cannot decide who was happier that night.

§Sentence-by-sentence translation Sentence-by-sentence translation

The setting was a waterfront path in Hong Kong on a stormy summer evening.

The storm grew worse, and the pavilion shook in the wind.

At the door, the old man said, “Thank you, young man. Kind hearts are stronger than any storm.”

It was a simple plot: a storm, an umbrella and a kind deed.

When they finally got home, they were soaking wet, and their mother made them hot chocolate.

The rain drummed on the windows all night, yet Marco slept with a warm smile, and the story found its happy resolution.

Even the narrator cannot decide who was happier that night.

3Step by step Steps

  1. BeginningCharacters in action from the start: Marco, the main character, and his sister were walking home when the sky suddenly turned dark.
  2. MiddleThe conflict grows: The storm grew worse, and the pavilion shook in the wind. Marco felt a conflict: the storm was frightening, but the old man had no umbrella.
  3. EndingResolve and golden line: Together, they shared one umbrella and walked the old man home. 'Kind hearts are stronger than any storm.'
  4. SettingTime and place set the mood: The setting was a waterfront path in Hong Kong on a stormy summer evening — a stormy night carries its own tension.
  5. ConflictThe dilemma drives everything: the storm was frightening, but the old man had no umbrella — help, or hurry home? Two pressures make a story.
  6. ClimaxThe tensest moment: The storm reached its climax as thunder rolled, but the old man kept talking about his garden.
  7. DialogueSpeech moves the plot: 'Grandpa, come here! You will get wet!' Marco shouted — one line beats three sentences of description.

5Worked example Example

Task: write a short story about helping someone in a storm using the four steps setting → conflict → climax → resolution.

  1. Step 1: The setting gives time, place and characters — a waterfront path on a stormy summer evening; Marco and his sister.
  2. Step 2: The conflict creates the dilemma — The storm was frightening, but the old man had no umbrella.
  3. Step 3: The climax raises the tension — Thunder rolled while they shared one umbrella and walked the old man home.
  4. Step 4: The resolution closes with feelings — 'Kind hearts are stronger than any storm.' Marco slept with a warm smile.
  5. Step 5: Add dialogue and the narrator's feelings to bring the story alive.
  6. Answer: The setting was a waterfront path in Hong Kong on a stormy summer evening. Marco and his sister were walking home when the sky suddenly turned dark, so they hid under a small pavilion. Then Marco noticed an old man standing alone in the rain. The conflict was clear: the storm was frightening, but the old man had no umbrella. 'Come here! You will get wet!' Marco shouted, and together they shared one umbrella and walked him home. At the door the old man smiled: 'Kind hearts are stronger than any storm.' Soaking wet at home, Marco still slept with a warm smile — a simple plot, but a happy resolution.
