§Text Passage
1Our classroom is on the fifth floor of the school. There are twenty desks and twenty chairs inside. Every student has a desk for books and a chair to sit on. My desk is next to the window, so I can see the playground and the big trees. On the front wall, there is a big blackboard and a round clock.
2I keep my school bag under my chair. Inside my bag, there is a pencil case with a pen, a pencil, a ruler and an eraser. My books sit neatly on my desk. Ken, my deskmate, always borrows my eraser. Today he forgets his ruler, so I lend him mine.
3We share our things and help each other every day. Our teacher says we are good classmates. After class, I put my pen, my pencil and my ruler back into my pencil case. I love my tidy desk, my little chair and my happy classroom. Good classmates make school fun.

3Step by step Steps
- Read the wordsRead desk, chair, bag, pencil case, ruler and eraser after your teacher, three times each. Look at the real object as you say the word, so the sound and the meaning stay together. Note that ruler and eraser both end in er but name different things, and pencil case is a compound word with the stress at the front.
- Point and sayPoint at an object and say the whole sentence, not just the word: This is my desk. This is my pencil case. The frame This is + my + thing is the simplest way to introduce an object. Saying full sentences now trains you to write full sentences later, with no missing subject or verb.
- Use there is / there areOne thing — There is a blackboard. Many things — There are twenty chairs. The verb agrees with the noun that follows: is for one, are for many. Do not write There is twenty chairs. After writing, read the sentence back and ask yourself how many things it names.
- Say where things areUse on, under, next to and in to say where things are: My bag is under the chair. The clock is on the wall. The frame is thing + is + position word + place. In English the position phrase goes at the end of the sentence, so keep in the box after the verb, not at the front.
- Borrow and thankAsk politely: May I borrow your ruler? When your friend lends it to you, say Thank you. In the passage, Ken forgets his ruler and borrows one from a classmate. May I... sounds politer than Can I..., and you can add Thank you for lending me your ruler. when you give it back.
- Sort the wordsWrite the words in two groups: things in the pencil case — pen, pencil, ruler, eraser; classroom furniture — desk, chair, blackboard. Sorting links words with similar meanings together, so they are easier to remember. When you meet a new word, decide which group it belongs to before you file it away.
5Worked example Example
Question: How do we describe our classroom with there is / there are and position words?
- Step 1: Decide first whether the thing is one or many, because the verb must agree: there is for one blackboard, there are for twenty chairs.
- Step 2: For one thing, start with there is and put a or an before the noun: There is a clock on the wall.
- Step 3: For many things, use there are and make the noun plural: There are twenty desks in the classroom.
- Step 4: Add a position word at the end: on, under or next to.
- Step 5: Put it all together — My school bag is under my chair, next to Ken's chair — then read it back to check.
- Answer: Sample answer: There is a big blackboard and a round clock on the front wall. There are twenty desks and twenty chairs in our classroom. My desk is next to the window, and my bag is under my chair.
