3Step by step Steps
- Read the animal wordsRead cat, dog, bird, fish, rabbit, tiger, lion and panda, and act each animal out as you say it: hop for rabbit, flap your arms for bird. Movement links the word to your body, so it stays in memory. Then sort the animals into pets and wild animals as a quick second review.
- Describe featuresIt has long ears and a short tail. The frame is It has + feature: long ears, a short tail, black and white fur. One animal has; many animals have. Join two or three features with and for a richer description, and always check whether the subject is singular before you choose has.
- has or haveSingular takes has: The dog has a long tail. Plural takes have: The cats have soft fur. Look only at the subject: one animal or it takes has; two or more, or they, take have. Long sentences can fool you — The dog and the cat have... names two animals, so it needs have. Circle the subject first.
- Say where it lives and what it eatsPandas live in the mountains and eat bamboo. Rabbits eat carrots. Use live in + place for the home and eat + food for meals, then add actions: Birds fly in the sky. Fish swim in the sea. With a plural subject the verb stays in its base form; change the subject to The panda and live becomes lives.
- Say how to protect animalsWe must protect animals. We should not throw rubbish into the sea. must shows a duty and should not shows something wrong, and both are followed by the base verb. More ideas: never touch baby birds, never buy things made from endangered animals. One must and one should not make a balanced answer.
- Introduce your petI keep a rabbit at home. It is white and soft. It eats carrots every day. Three steps: what you keep (I keep...), what it looks like (It is...) and its habits (It eats...). A pet takes it, so the verbs are is and eats. Joined together, the three sentences make a complete pet paragraph for your writing.
5Worked example Example
Question: How do we introduce an animal in five sentences, from looks to feelings?
- Step 1: Say what it is — The panda is a lovely and rare animal. — with one adjective that captures its impression.
- Step 2: Describe its features — It has black and white fur. The subject is It, so the verb is has.
- Step 3: Say what it eats — It eats bamboo all day. Naming the main food makes the description concrete.
- Step 4: Say where it lives — It lives in the mountains of China. After It, lives takes s.
- Step 5: Close with a feeling — I love pandas because they are so cute. — and give the reason with because.
- Answer: Sample answer: The panda is a lovely and rare animal. It has black and white fur. It eats bamboo all day and lives in the mountains of China. I love pandas because they are so cute.
