3Step by step Steps
- Paragraph 1: packing the bagPack means to put things into a bag: I pack my school bag before breakfast. The bag holds two books, a pencil case and a water bottle. Use a for one thing, and a number with a plural noun for two or more. Tip: pack already means put in, so say pack the bag, not put in the bag.
- Paragraph 2: my seatUse is plus a position word or adjective: My desk is near the window; my chair is blue and very comfortable. Both sentences follow subject + is + detail. Tip: desk and chair are singular, so use is; for two things joined by and, use are.
- Paragraph 2 again: the pencil caseKeep here means put away safely: I keep a pen, a pencil and a ruler in my pencil case. The pattern is keep + things + in + place. Tip: use and before the last item in a list; you can also write about other things on your desk to make the paragraph richer.
- Paragraph 3: my best friendSits next to me means sits beside me. In She helps me spell words, she is third person singular, so helps takes s. When she has no pen, write I lend her mine: mine stands for my pen, so we do not repeat it. Tip: help someone do something needs no to.
- borrow or lendBorrow is for taking in: I borrow her pen. Lend is for giving out: I lend her my pen. The two verbs point in opposite directions, so first ask who owns the thing. Tip: borrow from shows the source, as in I borrow a book from the library.
- Position words move upThree position words, three jobs: near the window means close to it but not necessarily touching; next to me means right beside me; inside the bag means within it. Pick the word after deciding what the thing is and what it is near. Tip: in and inside both mean within; inside stresses being enclosed, and in is enough at this level.
- Sentence practicePut position words into full sentences: My desk is near the window. My friend sits next to me. The first uses is for a static place; the second uses sits for an action plus a place. Try two different position words for your own seat, such as near the door or in front of me. Tip: separate the two sentences with full stops, not one long comma.
5Worked example Example
Seat description card: write four sentences about your seat with two position words and lend, then check each line.
- Sentence 1: My desk is near the window. Use is + near for position, capital first, full stop last.
- Sentence 2: My chair is blue and comfortable. Join two adjectives with and.
- Sentence 3: My best friend sits next to me. Friend is singular, so sits takes s; next to shows where.
- Sentence 4: When she loses her pen, I lend her mine. When starts the time clause; mine replaces my pen.
- Check: are the position words exact? Is lend pointing the right way? Capitals and full stops in place?
- Answer: My desk is near the window. My chair is blue and comfortable. My best friend sits next to me. When she loses her pen, I lend her mine.
