§Text Passage

1Our community has housing estates, shops, parks, a library and a market. Some communities have historic sites such as temples and old city gates; some lie near hills or the sea with lovely views. Every community has its own character; look carefully and you will find interesting people, things and stories all around.

2Workers of every trade help us every day: the police keep order, firefighters fight fires and save lives, doctors and nurses treat the sick, cleaners keep the streets hygienic, postmen deliver letters in all weathers, and shop assistants and waiters serve us. Each doing their own job, the big machine of the community runs smoothly.

3The community also offers many facilities and services: the library lends books, the sports centre and parks give us places to play, the community hall holds activities, the post office sends our letters, and the market sells fresh food. These facilities make life convenient; when we use them we follow the rules and care for public property so everyone can enjoy them.

4Living in the community means living in harmony with neighbours: greet them in the lift; stand properly on the escalator; queue for the swings at the park; do not shout in crowded places. Be polite to community workers too: greet the security guard who watches over the building every day, and thank the waiter who takes our order. With courtesy and mutual help, the community becomes one warm big family.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Step 1: Observe your community's characterEvery community has its own face: some are estates with a market and little shops downstairs; some hold century-old temples and old walls — historic sites; some sit by the sea, some on hillsides. On the way home, look carefully: where is the oldest tree? Which shop draws the most people? At the weekend, ask your family to walk the community with you and record interesting spots with photos or drawings. Knowing its character, you love where you grow up more and can introduce it to friends with ease.
  2. Step 2: Know the many tradesThe community is like a big machine, and every trade is a little cog — none can be missing. The police keep order; we can turn to them when lost or in danger. Firefighters fight fires and rescue people; doctors and nurses treat the sick; cleaners sweep the streets before dawn so the community stays hygienic; postmen deliver in all weathers; shop assistants and waiters serve us daily; plumbers and electricians fix water and power; bus drivers carry us around. When you meet them, smile and say thank you — every job helps our lives.
  3. Step 3: Make good use of facilitiesCommunity facilities and services make life easier: the library lends books free and offers quiet reading; the sports centre and playgrounds let us exercise; the community hall runs interest classes and events; the post office sends our letters; the market and supermarkets supply fresh food; the park is a fine place for a stroll. Most of these are provided by the government or organisations with everyone's money, so we may all use them — and must treasure them: return books on time, handle equipment gently and keep places clean.
  4. Step 4: Follow the rules when using facilitiesPublic facilities belong to everyone, and only by following the rules can all enjoy them. In the library speak softly and shelve books after reading; at the playground queue and never hog the equipment — when your turn on the swing ends, let the next child come; in the park do not trample the grass or pick flowers; in the lift let people out before going in, and help those in need. Damaging public property brings compensation — and takes away everyone's convenience. Keep rules from young and you become a popular, trusted citizen.
  5. Step 5: Live in harmony with neighboursWe see neighbours every day; harmony makes the community warm. In the lift and the lobby, smile and say good morning; stand on the right of the escalator, leaving the left for those in a hurry; hold the door for neighbours carrying things; turn the television and music down late at night and early morning so others can rest; let laundry water not drip downstairs. When you see a neighbour in need — an old lady with heavy bags — ask, Do you need a hand? Small kindnesses add up to the warmth of a community.
  6. Step 6: Draw a map of my communityDrawing a map of my community is a fine way to know it. First draw your own building, then the road you take to school, then mark the important places: school, library, park, market, post office, police post and clinic; add the community's special sights too, such as an old tree, a mural or a temple. When it is done, present it to your family: where can we borrow books? Where to ask for help if lost? Through drawing the map you remember the layout in your heart, and going to school or shopping alone becomes much easier.

5Worked example Example

Example: Your teacher asks you to present your community: name two trades that help everyone, and what to notice when getting along with neighbours.

  1. Start with its character: my community has a market, a park and a century-old temple where many people worship on Sundays.
  2. Talk about trades: police officers keep order — we can ask them when lost; cleaners sweep early every morning to keep the place clean.
  3. Talk about facilities: the library lends books and the park has a playground — we queue and never dirty the place.
  4. Talk about getting along: greet neighbours, stand on the right of the escalator, take turns on park equipment.
  5. Answer: My community has a market, a park and an old temple. Police keep order and cleaners keep it hygienic — every trade helps us. We follow the rules at the library and park, greet our neighbours and queue for turns. Living in harmony makes the community warmer.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✗ Hogging the swing at the park and letting nobody else play
✓ Park facilities are for all — queue and take turns
✗ Ignoring the security guard
✓ Greet him and thank him for his service
✗ Laughing loudly in the library
✓ Read quietly and follow library rules
✗ Turning the television up late at night
✓ Watch the volume; never disturb neighbours' rest
