§Text Passage

1After school and at weekends we enjoy many leisure activities: playing with toys, reading, drawing, playing chess, cycling and listening to music. Leisure relaxes us and teaches us skills. Active activities make the body strong; quiet ones feed the mind; we need both. Choose healthy activities and you return to lessons full of energy.

2Toys come in many kinds: building toys like blocks and models; role-play toys like dolls and soft toys; outdoor toys like remote-control cars and kites; plus board games. There are also Chinese traditional toys — the spinning top, the shuttlecock, the tangram and the bamboo dragonfly — passed down for hundreds or even thousands of years, simple in material yet full of wisdom.

3A spinning top stands steady as it turns, a matter of balance; kicking the shuttlecock tests eyes and feet; seven tangram pieces make endless shapes and train the imagination; rub a bamboo dragonfly between your palms and it flies up — said to have inspired the helicopter. Traditional toys are fun, and they carry the scientific wisdom of our ancestors.

4Cherishing toys is every child's duty: put them back after play; do not throw or pull them hard; take batteries out of battery toys when not used for long; clean them when dirty and ask adults to repair them when broken. Clean, tidy toys last longer — and caring for them thanks the family who bought them for us.

5Playing safely matters too: never put small parts in your mouth; do not open battery toys yourself; play ball games and bamboo dragonflies in open spaces away from roads and water; wash your hands after play. Choose the right place and follow the safety rules, and everyone plays happily and safely, with fuller holidays.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Step 1: Learn about leisure activitiesTime outside lessons — after school, weekends and holidays — is leisure, and the activities we enjoy in it are leisure activities. There are two kinds: active ones that make the body strong, such as cycling, swimming, ball games and kite flying; and quiet ones that feed the mind, such as reading, chess, drawing and music. We need both for balanced growth. Helping with chores and volunteering are meaningful leisure too. Choose healthy activities and avoid being hooked on electronic games; then leisure is full and good for you.
  2. Step 2: Learn the kinds of toysToys are our closest playmates, and there are many kinds: blocks and models are building toys that train hands and brain; dolls and soft toys are role-play toys that teach us to care; remote-control cars and kites are outdoor toys that bring us into the sunshine; board games challenge the mind most. Knowing the kinds helps us sort them when tidying: blocks in their box, dolls on their shelf — easy to find when playing and easy to put back, and the room stays neat by itself.
  3. Step 3: Know Chinese traditional toysWhen our grandparents were small there were no electronic gadgets, yet they played toys handed down for centuries: pull the string and the spinning top turns on and on — the longer it spins, the greater the skill; the shuttlecock, dressed in feathers, is kicked with the side of the foot — count how many in a row; the tangram has only seven pieces yet makes cats, boats and houses in endless variety; rub the bamboo dragonfly between your palms and it soars — said to have inspired the helicopter. Simple materials, ancient wisdom — give them a try.
  4. Step 4: Tidy your room with a methodA messy room hides toys and troubles parents. Tidy like this: first gather all the toys on the floor; next sort them into piles — blocks, soft toys, cars, puzzles; then give each pile a home, such as clear boxes, baskets or shelves, labelled with pictures; finally send every toy home — often-used ones low, fragile ones high. Tidy once a week at a fixed time and put things back right after play, and the room stays neat, with toys found in seconds.
  5. Step 5: Cherish your toys the right wayToys keep us company, so we must cherish them. Handle them gently — never throw, yank or hammer with them; put them back after play so they are not stepped on; take batteries out of battery toys not used for long, so leaking batteries do not ruin the parts; wash soft toys regularly and wipe the blocks clean; when something breaks, do not throw it away at once — ask an adult whether it can be repaired; and when a toy truly cannot be played with again, pass it on clean to a child who needs it, letting the joy continue.
  6. Step 6: Play with toys safelyHappy play must also be safe play. Check the age label when buying; young children should not have toys with small parts that could be swallowed. Read the instructions before playing and play the right way; never open battery toys yourself; fly bamboo dragonflies and play ball games in open spaces, away from roads, water and windows; wash your hands after playing. With little brothers and sisters around, keep small parts out of reach. Safety first keeps our happy play hours safe for the whole family.

5Worked example Example

Example: Mummy asks you to tidy your room. On the floor are a tangram, a soft toy, a remote-control car and a spinning top. How will you sort them and keep them in good condition?

  1. Sort: put the tangram back in its box; soft toys on the top shelf; the car and top into the toy chest.
  2. Check: is the tangram complete with all seven pieces? Should the car's batteries come out for long storage?
  3. Clean: wipe off dust with a dry cloth and wash the soft toy regularly to keep it hygienic.
  4. Place: often-used toys on low shelves, fragile ones high, with picture labels.
  5. Answer: I will sort the toys into puzzle, soft-toy and machine kinds, putting them in boxes, on shelves and in the toy chest; check the tangram is complete, take out the car's batteries, wipe everything clean, and keep often-used toys low. Then toys are not lost or broken and last much longer.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✓ Toys are not for experiments; throwing breaks them — cherish them
✗ Putting small parts in your mouth
✓ Small parts can cause choking — never in the mouth or nose
✗ Flying the bamboo dragonfly by the roadside
✓ Play in open safe places, away from roads and water
