§Text Passage

1In the community, a group of workers in uniform helps us every day. Each has special skills; find the right person when in trouble and problems are solved faster.

2Police keep order: they direct traffic, patrol the streets, and help lost children get home. In danger or to report a crime, call 999 or go to the nearest police station.

3Firefighters are heroes who fight fires and rescue people: wherever there is a fire, the fire engine goes; when someone is trapped in a lift or hurt in an accident, firefighters come with their tools. Doctors and nurses treat and care for the sick: with a fever or injury we go to a clinic or hospital; nurses care for patients, and ambulances rush the seriously hurt to hospital.

4The community has many more helpers: cleaners sweep the streets daily, postmen deliver letters in any weather, drivers carry us around, and social workers help people in need. Say thank you to them all — and when we grow up, we can choose a job that helps others too.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Step 1: Know police workPolice officers are community helpers who keep everyone safe. If you are lost, go to a police officer, who will help contact your family; when traffic jams at a crossing, police stand in the road and direct the cars; when bad people do bad things, police bring them to justice. With police guarding day and night, our lives are more secure. Example: if you are separated from your family on the street, stay where you are and ask a nearby police officer — the safest thing to do. A common mistake is fearing the police; they are friends who help us, so ask them bravely when in trouble.
  2. Step 2: Know firefightersFirefighters are heroes who put out fires and rescue people. When a fire starts, they put on fire-proof coats and helmets and rush to the scene in red fire engines; they rescue people from tall buildings with ladders and put out the blaze with hoses. When someone is trapped in a lift or hurt in an accident, firefighters come with their tools to help. Remember: children must never play with fire — fewer fires is the best help for firefighters. A common mistake is thinking a small fire can be handled alone; on finding a fire, leave at once and raise the alarm, for fighting fires is the firefighters' job.
  3. Step 3: Know medical staffDoctors and nurses are the medical staff who look after our health. When you have a fever and visit the doctor, the nurse takes your temperature first, records it, and then the doctor examines you; in hospital, nurses bring medicine and check your temperature on time, caring gently for every patient. Follow the medical staff's instructions, take medicine on time and rest well, and the body recovers quickly. Why thank them? They guard our health day and night. A common mistake is refusing bitter medicine; without it illness lingers — listening to the doctor is what truly cares for yourself.
  4. Step 4: Remember the emergency numberNine nine nine is Hong Kong's emergency number, and every child should remember it well. When there is a fire, or someone is badly hurt, call 999 calmly for help. On the phone, say clearly what has happened and where you are, so the rescuers can arrive as soon as possible. Why must we never make prank calls? Prank calls occupy the emergency line and delay people who truly need help. A common mistake is being too nervous to state the address; memorise your home address in advance, and you can report it quickly and clearly.
  5. Step 5: Respect all workersBesides police officers, firefighters and medical staff, there are many hard-working people in our community. The cleaner sweeps the streets and classrooms spotless, the driver takes us to and fro safely every day, and the postman delivers letters in any weather. Greet them with a smile and say good morning and thank you. Respecting every kind of work means respecting every person. A common mistake is thinking some jobs do not matter; every job helps us all, and without them the community could not run at all.
  6. Step 6: Think about your dream jobA dream job is the work you most want to do when you grow up. To be a firefighter, keep fit from a young age and never fear hard work in running and swimming; to be a doctor, study hard and keep a heart that loves to help others. Working well in class and helping others now prepares you for your dream, so you can help even more people when you grow up. A common mistake is thinking a dream needs only words; a dream comes true through effort day after day, and every bit of today's work becomes tomorrow's skill.

5Worked example Example

Example: on the way home, Ming sees an old lady who has fallen and cannot get up. Whom should he ask for help, and what should he do?

  1. Do not move the old lady, or the injury may get worse; stay beside her so she feels less afraid.
  2. Find a nearby adult at once, such as a shop assistant or a patrolling police officer.
  3. If she seems badly hurt, call 999 for an ambulance and state the place clearly.
  4. Stay beside her and comfort her, and leave only when the ambulance arrives.
  5. Answer: Ming should first ask a nearby adult for help and not move the old lady; if she is badly hurt, call 999 for an ambulance, state the place clearly, and stay to comfort her until it arrives. Helping others is a good thing for a child, but remember to act within your power — asking the right person for help matters most.
