§Text Passage

1Last month our school held a Health Week to teach students about healthy living. On Monday morning, a nurse from the district health centre gave a talk in the school hall. She explained that good nutrition gives our bodies the fuel they need to grow, think and play sport. A balanced diet, she said, should include plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and water. Skipping breakfast, she warned, only makes you tired and hungry before lunchtime.

2The nurse also warned that obesity among teenagers is rising, partly because many students eat fast food every day. She showed us a simple chart: one can of soft drink contains about ten spoons of sugar. Regular exercise, such as swimming, jogging or even walking up the stairs, keeps our hearts strong and helps us sleep better. Simple habits like washing our hands properly are also part of good hygiene. Enough sleep strengthens the immune system, so we can fight off illness more easily.

3Finally, the nurse reminded us that wellbeing means a healthy body and a happy mind. If we feel stressed about tests, we should talk to someone we trust instead of staying up all night. After the talk, many students promised to build a healthier lifestyle, starting with drinking more water and sleeping before midnight. Our class decided to keep a weekly exercise record and compare our progress at the end of the term. Even small changes, the nurse said, can make a big difference.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Eat wellA balanced diet is pillar one. Example: the nurse said it should include plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and water — and skipping breakfast only makes you tired and hungry before lunchtime.
  2. ExerciseExercise is pillar two. Example: regular activity such as swimming, jogging or even walking up the stairs keeps the heart strong and helps you sleep better — even thirty minutes a day helps, no gym needed.
  3. SleepSleep is pillar three. Example: enough sleep strengthens the immune system so the body can fight off illness — that is why the nurse advised sleeping before midnight instead of revising all night.
  4. Key vocabularyEight health words: nutrition, exercise, obesity, hygiene, immune system, wellbeing, balanced diet and lifestyle. Most of them appear in the quiz, so learn the definitions by heart.
  5. The power of dataNumbers persuade. Example: one can of soft drink contains about ten spoons of sugar, and obesity is rising partly because students eat fast food every day — one figure beats three vague sentences in writing.
  6. WellbeingWellbeing means body and mind. Example: when you feel stressed about tests, talk to someone you trust instead of staying up all night — a healthy body plus a happy mind is complete health.
  7. Write about itGive advice with should: You should eat a balanced diet… · You should exercise for thirty minutes a day… · You should sleep before midnight… Then close with the golden line: Even small changes can make a big difference.

5Worked example Example

Based on the Health Week passage, use should to give classmates advice on three areas — diet, exercise and sleep — and explain the benefits.

  1. Step 1: Diet advice — You should eat a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables and fruit.
  2. Step 2: Support it with data — One can of soft drink contains about ten spoons of sugar, so drink water instead.
  3. Step 3: Exercise advice — You should exercise for thirty minutes a day, such as swimming or jogging.
  4. Step 4: Sleep advice — You should sleep before midnight, because enough sleep strengthens the immune system.
  5. Step 5: Close — Even small changes can make a big difference.
  6. Answer: After Health Week, I would like to share some advice. First, you should eat a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole grains, and you should not skip breakfast. One can of soft drink contains about ten spoons of sugar, so you should drink more water instead. Second, you should exercise for thirty minutes a day — swimming, jogging or even walking up the stairs keeps your heart strong. Finally, you should sleep before midnight, because enough sleep strengthens your immune system. Remember: even small changes can make a big difference.
