My classroom is on the third floor, and it has a big window. In each lesson, we learn new and interesting things. The school hall is huge, and we have assembly there every Friday.

3Step by step Steps

  1. PlacesTo introduce a school, first learn the names of the places: classroom, playground, library, canteen and hall. Example: Our library has many interesting books. These are all countable nouns, so add s when there is more than one. To say what you do in these places, choose the right preposition, such as in the classroom and on the playground; a wrong preposition makes the meaning unclear.
  2. PeopleCommon people at school include teacher, student, principal and janitor. Add details about what they usually do, as in Our principal gives a speech at assembly every Monday. Remember that teacher and student are countable nouns and take s in the plural. The head of a school is the principal; do not confuse it with principle, which means a rule. The two words look similar but mean completely different things.
  3. ActivitiesSchool life is made up of activities: have lessons, have a break, have assembly and have PE lessons. Example: We have assembly in the school hall on Monday morning. In these phrases, have means to take part in an activity, as in have lunch and have a break; the article a in have a break cannot be left out. Also be careful with the spelling of assembly: the middle part is mbly, so do not drop any letters.
  4. ItemsCommon school items are book, pen, pencil, ruler, school bag and eraser. Example: I keep my books and pens in my school bag. These are countable nouns, so use a, one, two or some to show the amount. When you list several items, join the last two with and so the sentence sounds natural. Both school bag and schoolbag are accepted spellings, so you may choose either one.
  5. Match activities to placesTo say what you do and where, add the right preposition phrase to the activity: borrow books from the library, play football on the playground, have lunch in the canteen and have assembly in the school hall. Remember that in goes with large enclosed places and on with flat open spaces, while borrow goes with from to show where things come from. These pairings are fixed, so learn them as whole phrases.
  6. Describe with there is / areUse there is with a singular noun and there are with a plural noun to say that something exists in a place. Example: There are thirty students in my class. There is a big window in our classroom. The verb agrees with the nearest noun: is for singular or uncountable nouns and are for plurals. When listing things, match the first noun, as in There is a desk, two chairs and a bookshelf in the room. This rule of agreement is a popular exam point.

5Worked example Example

  4. Step 4: Give your favourite place and add the reason with because — My favourite place is the canteen because the fried rice is delicious.
  5. Step 5: Close with a feeling, using a contrast to make the ending warm and memorable — Our school is not big, but it feels like home.
