§Text Passage

1Xuanzang was a famous monk of the Tang dynasty. Finding the translated Buddhist scriptures incomplete and the schools divided, he resolved to travel to Tianzhu — today's India — for the original texts. Alone he headed west, crossing burning deserts and freezing mountains, often lost and short of water, yet he never gave up. The journey took seventeen years in all; he returned to Chang'an with over six hundred scrolls and wrote the Record of the Western Regions about all he saw.

2The gentle, steadfast monk in the novel Journey to the West is modelled on Xuanzang. Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie are imaginary, but the monk's spirit — facing every danger to reach the scriptures — comes from the real Xuanzang. Back in Chang'an, he spent the rest of his life translating more than seventy works and built the Big Wild Goose Pagoda to house the scrolls. With half his life he proved one belief: once you set your goal, carry it through to the end — a perseverance worth learning.

3The story of the Song general Yue Fei is just as moving. As a boy, his mother tattooed four characters on his back — serve the country with utter loyalty — to remind him to hold the nation in his heart. Grown up, Yue Fei led the disciplined Yue Family Army north against the Jin and won battle after battle; even the enemy said it was easier to shake a mountain than to shake the Yue Family Army. He taught his soldiers to love the people — never pull down a roof though freezing, never seize food though starving. Framed later by a wicked minister, he still inspires Chinese people with his loyal spirit.

4Late in the Southern Song there was another loyal minister, Wen Tianxiang. When Yuan troops came south he spent his fortune raising a volunteer army to defend the country, but was captured after defeat. He refused all offers of high rank and riches, and in prison wrote Crossing Lingding Ocean with the famous lines: Since ancient times, who has escaped death? Let my loyal heart shine in the pages of history. Lingding Ocean lies at the Pearl River estuary, south of Hong Kong. Wen Tianxiang went calmly to his death, and his integrity lives on.

5The three lived in different times: Xuanzang journeyed west to learn in the Tang, Yue Fei fought the Jin to guard the Southern Song, Wen Tianxiang gave his life at the Song's end. Their stories differ, but their spirits agree: Xuanzang's perseverance in learning, Yue Fei's loyal service, Wen Tianxiang's faithful integrity — treasures of the Chinese nation. Reading about heroes is not just remembering plots; it is taking their virtues into our own hearts and living them out.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Step 1: Why read the stories of heroesYears and events in history books fade, but stories of people stay with us. Reading about Xuanzang, Yue Fei and Wen Tianxiang is not just learning that such people once lived; it is asking: how did they choose in hardship, and why? Behind their choices lie perseverance, patriotism and integrity. The ancients said: use a person as a mirror to see your own gains and losses. Make these figures a mirror for your own conduct, and you will learn virtues that last a lifetime.
  2. Step 2: The story of Xuanzang's journeyXuanzang's journey was even more moving than the novel. He set out without companions, crossed eight hundred li of desert alone, spilled his water and went four or five days almost without a drop, nearly dying there; crossing snow mountains, many of his party froze, yet he pressed on. In Tianzhu he entered the great monastery of Nalanda, studied under famous teachers for years and became a revered monk. He carried the scriptures back to China and wrote the Record of the Western Regions, an important source for the history of Central Asia and India.
  3. Step 3: Xuanzang teaches perseveranceFrom Xuanzang we learn the word perseverance. Once he fixed his goal, the journey took seventeen years; deserts, snow mountains, bandits and illness never made him think of quitting. Back in Chang'an he spent nearly twenty years translating scriptures, right to the end of his life. Apply this to your life: when homework is hard, do not copy answers — work it out yourself; when practice for a sport or instrument turns dull, do not give up halfway; after losing a match, dry your tears and try again. Once a goal is set, walk towards it step by step — that is learning from Xuanzang.
  4. Step 4: Yue Fei serves the country loyallyYue Fei was born at the end of the Northern Song and became the famous Southern Song general fighting the Jin. His mother is said to have tattooed four characters on his back — serve the country with utter loyalty — so he would never forget it. Remembering her words, he led the Yue Family Army north and recovered lost land. His army was strictly disciplined and never troubled the people, earning the praise: freeze to death but tear down no houses, starve but seize no food. Even enemies sighed that shaking a mountain was easier than shaking the Yue Family Army. Framed by the wicked minister Qin Hui on a trumped-up charge, he died at only thirty-nine, yet those four characters became a symbol of patriotism.
  5. Step 5: Learn Yue Fei's patriotism and dutyYue Fei teaches us patriotism and responsibility. Loving your country does not mean going to war: studying hard and serving society with your gifts is today's way to repay the nation; respecting the flag and anthem and caring about public affairs also show patriotism. Yue Fei was dutiful to soldiers and people alike, and we can follow: as a monitor or prefect, be fair and responsible; in uniformed groups or volunteer service, finish every task well. Remember too that the Yue Family Army's finest quality was discipline — discipline in work and keeping promises is exactly the attitude we learn from history.
  6. Step 6: Wen Tianxiang stays faithful to the endWen Tianxiang was a top-scholar minister of the late Southern Song. When Yuan armies crossed the Yangtze he sold his property to raise a volunteer army, fought on though outnumbered, and was captured after defeat. Refusing every offer of rank and riches, he wrote in prison Song of Righteousness and Crossing Lingding Ocean. His famous lines declare his heart: death holds no terror; what matters is a loyal heart shining in history. Jailed for more than three years, he never bent, and went calmly to his death. This unshaken faith in what is right is called integrity.
  7. Step 7: Match the spirits, link to lifeNow match the three figures with three spirits: Xuanzang — perseverance in learning, unafraid of hardship; Yue Fei — loyal service, brave and dutiful; Wen Tianxiang — faithful patriotism, unbending integrity. Then think of your own life: stuck revising something hard, think of Xuanzang and hold on a little longer; serving as monitor or flag-bearer, think of Yue Fei and do it more carefully; having promised something, think of Wen Tianxiang and feel the weight of a promise. These heroes left us long ago, but their spirits can live daily in our choices.

5Worked example Example

Example: the teacher hands out three person cards (Xuanzang, Yue Fei, Wen Tianxiang) and three spirit cards (perseverance in learning, loyal service to the country, faithful patriotism). Match them correctly and say how you can learn from one of them.

  1. First recall the stories: Xuanzang journeyed seventeen years to Tianzhu for scriptures; Yue Fei carried the tattooed words and led his army against the Jin; Wen Tianxiang refused to surrender after defeat and wrote his famous line about a loyal heart shining in history.
  2. Match them: Xuanzang with perseverance, for he crossed deserts and snow mountains for knowledge; Yue Fei with loyal service, for he lived for the country; Wen Tianxiang with faithful patriotism, for he kept his integrity to the end.
  3. Link to yourself: for example, learn Xuanzang's perseverance — when the group project gets hard, do not give up; look things up, ask the teacher, and finish it.
  4. Check your answer: does each match have a reason from the story? Does your example come from real life?
  5. Answer: The matches are: Xuanzang — perseverance in learning; Yue Fei — loyal service to the country; Wen Tianxiang — faithful patriotism. Learn by living their spirits daily: like Xuanzang, do not give up when things are hard; like Yue Fei, do your duty with all your heart; like Wen Tianxiang, keep your promises and principles. Give the story first, then your own example, and the answer is complete.
