§Text Passage

1Teacher: Good morning, Kevin. Let's practise for your interview for the library prefect post. Kevin: Good morning, Miss Lam. Honestly, I feel quite nervous. Teacher: Nervous is fine. It shows you care about the role. When they ask about your strengths, tell them you are organised and careful with books. Kevin: And what if they ask about my weakness?

2Teacher: Be honest but positive. You can say you speak too softly, and that you are learning to be more confident. Kevin: Should I mention my experience as class monitor last year? Teacher: Definitely. Real examples always make your answers stronger. Kevin: Then I will talk about the book fair I helped organise, and how we sorted three hundred donated books.

3Teacher: That's a great example. What about body language? Kevin: That's what I wanted to ask too. Should I shake hands? Teacher: If the interviewer offers a hand, yes; sit up straight, keep eye contact and stay polite, even when a question is difficult. Kevin: I see. If they ask a follow-up question, I will answer it directly instead of guessing wildly. Teacher: Exactly. One last tip: prepare a question to ask them at the end. Kevin: Good idea. I will ask about the new books in the library. Thank you, Miss Lam. Teacher: You're welcome. And remember to thank them before you leave the room. Good luck!

§Sentence-by-sentence translation Sentence-by-sentence translation

Teacher: Good morning, Kevin. Let's practise for your interview for the library prefect post.

Kevin: Good morning, Miss Lam. Honestly, I feel quite nervous.

Kevin:

Teacher: Nervous is fine. It shows you care about the role. When they ask about your strengths, tell them you are organised and careful with books.

Kevin: And what if they ask about my weakness?

Kevin:

Teacher: Be honest but positive. You can say you speak too softly, and that you are learning to be more confident.

Kevin: Should I mention my experience as class monitor last year?

Kevin:

Teacher: Definitely. Real examples always make your answers stronger.

Kevin: Then I will talk about the book fair I helped organise, and how we sorted three hundred donated books.

Teacher: That's a great example. What about body language?

Kevin: That's what I wanted to ask too. Should I shake hands?

Kevin:

Teacher: If the interviewer offers a hand, yes; sit up straight, keep eye contact and stay polite, even when a question is difficult.

Kevin: I see. If they ask a follow-up question, I will answer it directly instead of guessing wildly.

Teacher: Exactly. One last tip: prepare a question to ask them at the end.

Kevin: Good idea. I will ask about the new books in the library. Thank you, Miss Lam.

Teacher: You're welcome. And remember to thank them before you leave the room. Good luck!

3Step by step Steps

  1. PreparePrepare three things: your self-introduction, your strengths and why you want the role. Example: Kevin practises for the library prefect post, and the teacher suggests I am organised and careful with books — strengths need examples.
  2. AnswerThe formula: direct answer + example (STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result). Example: As class monitor last year, I helped organise the book fair, and we sorted three hundred donated books — all four parts present.
  3. BodyThree body-language basics: sit up straight, keep eye contact and stay polite. Example: If the interviewer offers a hand, yes — shake hands only when the interviewer starts it.
  4. EndClose in two moves: prepare one question to ask (I will ask about the new books in the library) and thank them before you leave: Thank you for your time.
  5. WeaknessBe honest but positive about weaknesses. Example: You can say you speak too softly, and that you are learning to be more confident — admit it and show you are improving.
  6. Follow-upsAnswer follow-up questions directly instead of guessing wildly. Example: If they ask a follow-up question, I will answer it directly — and it is polite to ask for repetition if you mishear.
  7. MindsetNerves are normal. Example: the teacher says Nervous is fine. It shows you care about the role — breathe deeply, speak slowly, and let your care show.

5Worked example Example

Based on the interview practice in the passage, answer in full: What is your strength, and what experience do you have? (direct answer + example)

  1. Step 1: Answer the strength directly — I am organised and careful with books.
  2. Step 2: Add an example (STAR) — As class monitor last year, I helped organise the book fair and we sorted three hundred donated books.
  3. Step 3: Be honest but positive about a weakness — I speak too softly, but I am learning to be more confident.
  4. Step 4: Mind your body language — sit up straight, keep eye contact, smile.
  5. Step 5: Close — prepare one question to ask, and thank them before you leave: Thank you for your time.
  6. Answer: My main strengths are that I am organised and careful with books. For example, as class monitor last year, I helped organise the school book fair, and my team sorted three hundred donated books in two days. I would say my weakness is that I speak too softly, but I am learning to be more confident every day. If you have any follow-up questions, I will answer them directly. Finally, may I ask what new books the library plans to buy this year? Thank you for your time.
