§Text Passage

1China is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (with the US, UK, France and Russia) and holds veto power. The status reflects China's place in the post-war order — and carries duties: voting on global security matters and contributing peacekeepers. China is among the largest contributors of UN peacekeeping personnel, serving from Africa to the Middle East.

2China participates widely in international organisations and agreements: a WTO member, a WHO member, a party to the Paris Agreement on climate, and the proposer of 'a community with a shared future for mankind', stressing multilateral cooperation and peaceful development. The cornerstone of foreign policy remains the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence from the 1950s: mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

3Hong Kong is not a sovereign state, but under the Basic Law it participates in international organisations (such as the WTO) and treaties as 'Hong Kong, China' — a unique arrangement under One Country, Two Systems. For students, the connection is real: climate pledges affect decarbonisation, trade affects prices and jobs. The world is large, and we are all in the same web.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Step 1: Remember the great-power roleChina is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — an identity that brings rights and duties together: the veto in votes, and a role in handling global security issues. The country is, for example, a leading contributor of personnel to UN peacekeeping, with peacekeepers serving long terms in Africa and the Middle East, shouldering the responsibility of safeguarding world peace in practice.
  2. Step 2: Match topics to organisationsChina holds seats and roles in all the major international organisations: the World Trade Organization governs trade rules, the World Health Organization coordinates public health, and the Paris Agreement drives climate cooperation. A useful method is to pair one topic with one organisation — pandemics with the WHO, carbon reduction with the Paris Agreement. This keeps the knowledge organised and makes accurate, fitting examples easier to cite in answers, without mixing them up.
  3. Step 3: One line of foreign policyChina's diplomatic thinking runs in one line: in the 1950s it proposed the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, stressing mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs; today it advocates building a community with a shared future for mankind, whose core is still win-win cooperation. Setting the early principles beside the modern vision in an answer shows both the historical context and the continuity of policy, giving the answer more depth.
  4. Step 4: Hong Kong's unique participationUnder the Basic Law, Hong Kong may take part in bodies such as the World Trade Organization under the name 'Hong Kong, China'. Note that this is not an independent membership but participation authorised by the state — a concrete expression of One Country, Two Systems in foreign affairs, and a reflection of Hong Kong's distinctive place in the international trade network, a point worth stressing accurately in answers.
  5. Step 5: Link to daily lifeThe nation's international role is closely tied to daily life: climate pledges affect the energy mix and air quality, trade relations touch prices and job opportunities, and peacekeeping shapes the country's international image. When asked why international affairs matter, using these everyday links as reasons makes an answer concrete and persuasive instead of vague and empty.
  6. Step 6: Verify from many sourcesNews about international affairs comes from media of many stances, so the habit of verification matters: compare Chinese and foreign coverage of the same event, check official documents and data sources, and separate fact from comment. Information literacy is the first skill for understanding international affairs — and an indispensable part of civic education, best cultivated through daily reading of the news.

5Worked example Example

Sample: 'Give two examples of China's contribution to international affairs.'

  1. Step 1: Security — China is a permanent Security Council member and a top peacekeeping contributor, serving in Africa and the Middle East.
  2. Step 2: Sustainability — China signed the Paris Agreement, pledging carbon peak by 2030 and neutrality by 2060.
  3. Step 3: Significance — the two examples cover security and sustainable development.
  4. Step 4: Conclusion — as a permanent member, participation is both status and responsibility.
  5. Answer: Sample answer: First, in security, China is a permanent member of the Security Council and a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping across conflict regions. Second, in sustainability, China signed the Paris Agreement, pledging carbon peak by 2030 and neutrality by 2060. As a permanent member, such participation is both a status and a responsibility for global affairs.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✗ Thinking Hong Kong is a UN member state.
✓ UN members are sovereign states — HK joins some bodies as 'Hong Kong, China'.
✗ Answering 'China is strong' without examples.
✓ Cite evidence: peacekeeping, the Paris Agreement, the Security Council veto.
✗ Getting the five permanent members wrong.
✓ China, US, UK, France, Russia — memorise; common in MC questions.
✗ Omitting the 'Hong Kong, China' status.
✓ It is the Basic Law's unique arrangement — essential in answers about HK.
