§Text Passage

1Join a battery, a wire, a switch and a small bulb into a loop, press the switch gently — and the bulb lights up. This small loop is a circuit: current leaves the battery, travels through the bulb along the wires, and returns. Not a single gap is allowed.

2A circuit must be complete above all: any loose joint or break stops the current immediately. A switch exists to break the loop on purpose — open, the bulb goes dark; closed, the current flows again.

3Instead of drawing real objects every time, scientists use standard circuit symbols: a cell is a long line beside a short one, a switch a gate that opens, a bulb a circle with a cross. A drawing made of these symbols is a circuit diagram, understood by textbooks and engineers worldwide.

4Reading diagrams and building real circuits is the first skill of electricity. Next lesson goes deeper: what exactly is the relationship between current, voltage and resistance?

2Vocabulary cards Vocabulary

C
Circuit電路

A complete closed loop through which current flows, made of a source, wires and components.

C
Complete circuit閉合電路

A circuit joined all the way round from the source through components and back; break it anywhere and the current stops.

C
Cell電池(單池)

A single unit that converts chemical energy to electrical energy; several joined together form a battery.

S
Switch開關

A component that opens or closes a circuit: closed lets current flow, open stops it.

B
Bulb燈泡

A component that converts electrical energy into light and heat.

C
Circuit diagram電路圖

A drawing that represents a circuit using standard symbols.

C
Circuit symbol電路符號

Standard shapes standing for components: a cell is one long and one short line, a switch a breakable gate, a bulb a circle with a cross.

C
Conducting wire導線

Metal wire joining the circuit for current to flow through, usually copper with an insulating plastic coat.

3Step by step Steps

  1. Current must go roundElectric current must flow along a closed loop: join battery, switch and bulb with wires into a loop and close the switch — current leaves the battery, passes through the bulb and returns, and the bulb lights at once. Open the switch, the loop is broken, the current cannot complete the circle and the bulb goes out immediately. This idea of a loop is the foundation of all circuit analysis and is needed later for series and parallel work.
  2. One break stops everythingA simple circuit has only one path, so a break anywhere stops the current at once: pull out any single wire and the bulb goes dark, whether the gap is beside the battery or beside the bulb — the effect is identical. That is why every joint must be firm and the whole loop checked section by section before an experiment. If a bulb fails to light, looking for a break first is the quickest way to find the fault.
  3. Learn the symbolsCircuit diagrams use unified symbols for components: a cell is drawn as a long line beside a short one, the long line marking the positive terminal, which must never be swapped; a bulb is a circle with a cross; a switch is a gate that can open. These symbols are the same worldwide, so engineers can read each other's circuits from drawings alone. Learning the symbols is the first step in reading and drawing circuits and essential groundwork for electricity practicals.
  4. Drawing a circuit diagramDrawing a circuit diagram needs order: taking battery + switch + bulb as an example, arrange the symbols in sensible positions first, then join them with straight lines representing wires into one closed loop. Draw wires straight with right-angle turns so the diagram stays clear, and avoid crossing lines so the current path can be seen at a glance. Neat drawing is not just for looks — it makes checking the wiring much easier.
  5. Where to put the switchIn a simple circuit with one path, a switch controls the whole circuit from any position: current has only one route, so opening the switch stops the current everywhere, whether the switch sits near the battery or near the bulb. A light switch at home works on the same principle — press to connect, press again to break. Remember the safety rule, though: always cut the power before servicing a circuit, making sure no current can flow.
  6. Diagram to real, real to diagramReading diagrams and wiring circuits are core practical skills: given a circuit diagram, build the battery, switch and bulb accordingly; then check symbol by symbol, watching the battery polarity and making sure every joint is firm. In reverse, you should also be able to draw a real circuit back as a symbol diagram. This two-way conversion between drawing and hardware is the basis for designing and analysing circuits later.

5Worked example Example

Example: Mary builds the circuit as drawn, but the bulb does not light when the switch is closed. List sensible checks.

  1. Check the battery: is it flat, inserted the wrong way, or not touching the contacts?
  2. Check every connection for loose wires and damaged leads.
  3. Check the bulb — swap in a new one to test.
  4. Check that the loop is complete and the switch is really fully closed.
  5. Answer: First check the source: whether the battery is flat, inserted the wrong way or not touching the contacts; then check every joint for loose or broken wires; next check the components by swapping in a new bulb to see whether it has burnt out; finally confirm the loop is complete and the switch fully closed. Working through the items one by one finds the fault, so current can travel the whole loop and the bulb lights.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✗ Assuming a dark bulb must be a broken bulb.
✓ Check the loop, the battery and the connections first; only then swap the bulb.
✗ Treating the long and short lines of a cell symbol as the same.
✓ The long line is the positive terminal and the short line the negative — never swap them in a diagram.
✗ Connecting wires in any random loop.
✓ Connections must be firm and follow the diagram; a careless loop can break the circuit or cause a short.
✗ Believing the bulb stays hot with the switch open.
✓ An open switch stops the current, so the bulb cools down — no current means no heat or light.
