DSE vs IB vs IAL: choosing a route
The three main post-16 curricula for HK students — local DSE, the IB Diploma and British A-levels — compared by structure, grading, assessment and fit.
At a glance
| DSE | IB (IBDP) | IAL / GCE-AL | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structure | 4 core + 2–3 electives (plus M1/M2, ApL) | 6 subjects (3 HL + 3 SL) plus TOK / EE / CAS core | 3–4 subjects studied in depth (linear or modular) |
| Grading | Levels 1–5 with 5* / 5**; Citizenship reported as attained | 45-point scale (7 per subject + 3 core) | A*–E |
| Assessment | Exam-centred with SBA components in some subjects | Continuous: internal assessments plus global final exams | Edexcel IAL modular with multiple exam windows; CAIE linear AS/A2 |
| University entry | Main route is JUPAS (332A); widely accepted overseas | JUPAS non-DSE route plus mainstream overseas acceptance | JUPAS non-DSE route plus mainstream overseas acceptance |
| Suits | Strong exam takers aiming at local universities | Broad, expressive and research-minded students | Depth-focused students with clear strengths |
Note: since the 2010 medium-of-instruction fine-tuning, many local schools run mixed models — check subject-level MOI rather than a single EMI/CMI label (the school database will list this per school).
The three curricula
University entry and switching
All three routes lead to local universities: DSE via the main JUPAS route; IB and A-level applicants use the JUPAS non-DSE route or apply directly (Non-JUPAS); overseas universities accept all three. Switching tracks mid-secondary is possible but needs early planning on credits and language requirements — discuss with the school.
About this comparison
Verified 17 Oct 2026; programme structures and grading follow the HKEAA, IBO and Pearson official publications. Which schools run which curriculum will be listed per school in the database.
