§Text Passage

1Secondary 3 adds a set of advanced machines: lathes spin the workpiece while a tool cuts cylinders and threads; vacuum formers press heated sheet over a mould into light shells; laser cutters follow digital drawings to slice and engrave boards precisely; 3D printers stack melted plastic layer by layer into solid forms.

2Each has its own strength: lathes for round parts, vacuum forming for shells, lasers for flat sheets and fine detail, 3D printing for lattices and curves. Precision and repeatability are shared advantages — but power and speed demand respect: train first, wear goggles, keep sleeves tight and hair tied back, and follow every machine's safety rules.

3Machines need instruments: the multimeter measures voltage, current and resistance and tests continuity — the first safety net of any electronic build; data-logging devices connect to sensors and record temperature, light and sound automatically, drawing charts that make long tests readable at a glance.

4Choose by shape, material, precision and quantity: laser-cut flat tabs, vacuum-form curved shells, 3D-print complex solids, turn round parts on the lathe. Let each machine do what it does best and your build will be fast and reliable — the key skill of turning a design into a real product.

3Step by step Steps

  1. From hand tools to digital controlSecondary 1 and 2 used craft knives, scroll saws and drills for simple jobs. Secondary 3 brings a set of advanced machines with two shared traits: they are controlled by digital instructions or precise mechanisms, giving accuracy and repeatability far beyond handwork; and their power and speed demand stricter safety. Before any machine, get trained, wear personal protective equipment, keep sleeves tight and hair tied back. For example, a hand drill may wander two or three millimetres, while a CNC laser holds to a fraction of one — and a hundred parts come out with identical holes. That is the advantage of digital control.
  2. The lathe: turning the round worldA lathe spins the workpiece at speed while a tool feeds slowly from the side, cutting cylinders, cones and threads — shapes of revolution. Wood lathes handle timber; metal lathes turn bar stock. The work must be clamped firmly in the chuck, the tool set on centre, goggles worn throughout; never touch a spinning workpiece, and stop the machine before measuring. For example, the round handle of a wooden spinning-top launcher is turned on a wood lathe: mount a square strip in the chuck, and as it spins the tool rounds it, cuts steps, then sanding finishes it; model-axles and instrument columns are lathe work too.
  3. Vacuum forming: heating and sucking shellsA vacuum former clamps and heats a plastic sheet until soft, drapes it over a mould, and draws the air out through small holes below; atmospheric pressure presses the sheet tightly onto the mould, and after cooling it lifts off as a thin shell matching the mould. It suits large, thin products — casings, liners, blister packaging — and moulds can be carved from wood or 3D printed at low cost. For example, refrigerator liners, transparent mooncake box lids and bath shells are vacuum formed; a student modelling a radio-controlled car body carves a wooden buck and pulls a light, streamlined shell in one go.
  4. The laser cutter: digital patterns, precise formsA laser cutter guides a high-energy beam with computer-controlled mirrors, cutting or engraving boards such as wood and acrylic along the drawing's path: edges come smooth, and fine patterns and text render accurately — draw the file, set power and speed, and cut. Safety is critical: chlorine-bearing plastics such as polyvinyl chloride release toxic fumes under the beam and must never be cut; keep the lid closed and the extraction running. For example, for a puzzle lamp box, the laser cuts every tab of the wooden frame in one run and engraves the panel's pattern at low power — precision no hand saw can match.
  5. The 3D printer: additive making, layer by layerA 3D printer works opposite to cutting: instead of removing material it adds it. The digital model is sliced into countless thin layers, and a nozzle stacks molten plastic filament along each layer's outline from bottom to top — additive manufacturing. It excels at lattices, curves and one-piece forms that traditional craft finds hard, and it is the tool of rapid prototyping. For example, a phone stand with an inward-curved cradle would take long chiselling in wood; with 3D printing you draw the model, collect the part hours later, and when the angle feels wrong, edit and print again — iteration speed that reshapes the whole design process.
  6. Multimeters and data-logging devicesThis year introduces professional measuring instruments. A multimeter measures direct and alternating voltage, current and resistance, and offers a continuity test: wire the circuit, measure once, and only power up after confirming no short circuit; select the correct function and range, and never reverse the red and black probes. A data-logging device connects sensors for temperature, light or sound, records automatically over long periods and plots charts, ideal for slow or extended changes. For example, to compare two flasks, log the water temperature every minute for an hour and the complete cooling curves show at a glance which keeps heat better.
  7. Choosing machines to match the designFour conditions guide machine choice: shape — round parts to the lathe, thin shells to vacuum forming, flat sheet to the laser, complex solids to 3D printing; material — wood and acrylic laser well, metal needs dedicated equipment; precision and quantity — one-off prototypes suit 3D printing while mass production needs moulds; and, finally, cost and time. A good combination makes the build twice as effective for half the effort. For example, for a radio case, laser-cut the straight-edged boards, 3D-print the curved trims, and turn small locating pins on the lathe; forcing every part through one machine sacrifices both quality and efficiency.

5Worked example Example

Example: you have designed a desk night light — a wooden base, a curved shade and an LED circuit. Choose machines and instruments for each part.

  1. Break down the parts → the base is flat board with tabs, the shade a thin curved shell, the circuit needs a continuity check; no round parts anywhere
  2. Base → laser-cut 5 mm board and engrave decoration in one run; the tabs make assembly precise
  3. Shade → vacuum-form milky white sheet over a curved mould for even, soft light
  4. Circuit → after soldering, check the LED circuit with the multimeter's continuity range before connecting the battery
  5. Answer: Each part uses the machine that suits it: the base is flat board, so the laser cutter wins on precision and tab fit, with engraving included; the shade must be thin, light and evenly translucent, which vacuum forming achieves with a cheap mould; the lathe has no round work here and is rightly left out; the multimeter's continuity test proves the circuit before power. Allocating machines by shape, material and testing needs makes the build fast and reliable.

6Common mistakes Mistakes

✗ A laser cutter can cut any material, including any plastic.
✓ Chlorine-bearing plastics such as PVC release toxic fumes and must never be laser cut; always confirm the material first.
✗ It is fine to clear chips from a lathe while it spins, if you are quick.
✓ Stop the machine and wait until everything stands still before clearing or measuring — never touch a spinning workpiece or tool.
✗ 3D printing works like a lathe, cutting material away.
✓ 3D printing is additive, stacking layers; the lathe is subtractive, cutting away excess material.
✗ Any multimeter range will do for measuring voltage.
✓ Select the correct function and range first; the wrong setting can damage the meter or give false readings.
